I trained my patience today. 5 hours of highway driving on an Interstate Hwy can really do this for a person. The good news is I made the round trip with no mishaps and extensive use of cruise control. After today, if I ever loss the use of my legs, I am convinced I could get around using the hand controls on the steering wheel.

My wife saw her primary care physician today. No one is sure what happened last Sunday when she lost consciousness for about 20 minutes, but it seems very possible it is related to a lack of oxygen. Her lungs are full of fluid which her body is retaining because her kidneys aren't working. Interestingly, unlike in the past, her legs are not retaining that much fluid.

The doctor is going to set us up with hospice. There was mention of a hospital bed which we both feel we need to think about. The advantage is her being able to elevate while sleeping. The disadvantage is that hospital beds aren't comfortable and also where to put it. If we set it up in the guest room, it is a slightly longer walk to the toilet than the master bedroom which has an en-suite.

I hope to make it to the gym tomorrow. Hopefully there will be no unexpected events to keep me from going. I really need to unwind and to work my deltoids.

Legs yesterday was..

One legged squats holding Dumbbell 3 sets per leg
leg curls feet flexed towards shins 3 sets
Seated leg press 3 sets
Stiff legged Deadlifts 3 sets
Power leg extensions Gironda style 3 sets

Decided to do some one legged squats standing on the platform behind the incline bench holding on with one hand on a Barbell. Wish we had a Hammer unilateral leg press. I liked that machine. Nice burn from these and i did 15 reps each set. 3 sets was enough. no cardio my legs were fried. Never worked calfs i had no time. I have experimented with toes pointed on the leg curl as it is alleged it hits the gastrocnemius. Hope i spelt that correct 8)

Isn't fluid in the lungs a sign of congestive heart failure too?  Is she on dialysis? Maybe her depression will lift if they gets the toxins out of her blood with dialysis.  Choosing death by refusing dialysis may be her choice but is it with a clear head or is it clouded from sickness that not going through dialysis is causing? Sorry for voicing opinions where I should just be giving comfort. Of course I don't know what she is going through. Prayers for you, your family and your wife.

Your questions are valid. She agreed to have a shunt installed in her arm for dialysis. This was done about 6 months ago. When she agreed to this, she made it absolutely clear that she was only doing this to appease our daughter and me. Since that time she's repeatedly stated that she does not want to be on permanent dialysis. Most of the time, she's very clear headed. She is also very strong willed and stubborn.

She has congestive heart failure. Yes, this is partly why she's retaining water. She is also retaining water because her kidney function is a 10% or less. She also has type II diabetes, a non functioning thyroid, severe arthritis, which results in he being in constant pain. She is extremely anemic. She has to have infusions every two weeks to help make red blood cells.

The list is long and she's been quite ill for at least the last 10 years. She's just sick of being sick. I don't believe she wants to die, she just doesn't want to live if living means living in misery and pain. She's worn out emotionally and physically. My wife is 72 years old. She's lived a good life all-in-all.

Her health issues are partly due to poor genetics, some bad luck and also a result of her having not done the very thing many others do to stay healthy, such as watch our diets and exercise regularly....in other words, look after herself. To my wife's credit, she's never been a drinker and she quit smoking when she was in her late 40's. She's led a clean and wholesome life.

Steve, keep exercising and doing whatever it takes to be as fit and healthy as possible. There may be no guarantees in life, but taking a positive approach to managing one's health is very productive and the process is gratifying because the rewards are obvious. Not only do folks who exercise, eat reasonably clean and lead good lives look better, they feel better too.

We have a wonderful family and great friends who are our support team. It really helps that my wife and I aren't weathering this storm alone.

When my wife was having a seizure in the car on the way to breakfast last Sunday, it was surreal. After my daughter jumped in the car to help, I snapped to and drove safely and quickly to the emergency room. There wasn't much room for emotions. Sometimes we just go into "auto pilot" mode.

It took five sets of progressively "heavier" weight for me to get to my one working set on DB laterals for my shoulders.  From there I tried out the Smith Machine for shoulder presses, following the same pattern but for two warm ups and one working set.

Next, three  sets of twenty reps for curls done in a non-stop fashion followed by one working set of alternate DB curls.

On to triceps and three progressively heavier sets of close grip machine bench presses followed by one working set and then one set of bodyweight dips.

One warm up  and one working set of machine sit ups.   Finished.

I generally go heavier on shoulder presses regardless of the equipment used and I do them at the onset of my shoulder routine. I've found for me doing side laterals with really lite resistance and a very controlled movement actually produces more pump then doing them with heavier weights. Of course we all respond differently to exercise.

I had the second of two day long meetings this week that I could not get out of. I've cancelled a third out of town meeting coming up this Saturday because I don't think I should be gone three days this week leaving my daughter and her husband to assume responsibility for my wife's care.

My wife did okay today. According to our daughter, she forgot where I was several times and asked for me. It's disconcerting that she's losing touch a little. It is part of renal failure though. When the toxins build up in one's system, it can cause confusion.

We're watching television tonight (as usual). She seems fairly copacetic right now. I've talked with her about the possibility of her allowing dialysis. She's not making a commitment. Hospice is going to contact me tomorrow regarding hospice care.

I apologize for hijacking this thread with these personal posts. I really need to off-load my feelings and experiences right now and you all have been so supportive of our situation. I really appreciate it. If it is becoming a problem, please let me know.

You cannot hijack that which is given freely.  Love, friendship, training and more.  This is a thread amongst friends and it is about life.  You and your wife are a part of our lives.   We can only watch from a distance but that does not mean we do not hold you both close in our hearts.

Make no mistake, I am no "man of God".  There are none to be found.  But...We are all His children.  Some more prodigal than others.  If we but ask from within, at that moment we shall know His love and the peace of the promise.

The Lord make His face to shine upon you and your wife.

I am please to report that after interviewing hospice this afternoon, my wife has decided to keep up the fight for awhile longer. She has agreed to at least give dialysis a try if that is in order.

That is great news. Maybe after a couple of weeks of blood cleaning she will start to feel better and her her health will improve. Is a kidney transplant in the future an option?

A kidney transplant is not likely. My wife isn't healthy enough to survive that or any other major surgery at this point. Dialysis won't change this. Dialysis will hopefully improve her quality of life by making her feel better. If she doesn't pass from kidney failure, she will likely die of congestive heart failure. At this point she is retaining water, mainly in her lungs which affects her oxygen saturation levels. To help counter this, she uses oxygen 24/7 with a pretty high flow rate of 4.

Before she begins dialysis, her nephrologists will assess whether it is time to do this. Although her kidney function is at 10% she is still making urine. The doctor mentioned she has one patient who has been at 7% function for over a year and has not begun dialysis. Every case or person is different.

She seems to be in pretty good spirits today. We got up early (for us) at 10:00 a.m. I fixed oatmeal at her request. She ate a decent sized amount. So he appetite is good at the moment. She also ate a pretty good dinner last night. Again I fixed lamb per her request. I baked one potato of which she ate 1/4 with me eating the rest. Along with this we had salad with a lot of raw vegetables in it.

We are both taking things a day at a time. That's pretty much all we can do.

Prime, I hope things improve.

Today I trained delts and triceps. I have a lot of problems with my shoulder and doing rotator cuff exercises helps. What I found really helped was old fashion stretching. I do 4 stretches for my shoulders and they have really responded. I thought rotator cuff exercises would be what saved my shoulders and it turned out stretching did more for the pain I was feeling. Go figure.

I rested about a hour and went to the park for a run. It's one mile around the park on an asphalt  path. The weather has been brutal here in NJ but today it was about 43F and sunny. Ran for 3 miles and started to really feel it on the last half mile. Drove home from the run blasting a Tom Jones CD on my sound system with the windows down. Don't judge me.  ;D
