He should have never told the cop he was carrying a gun.  It doesn't excuse what happened, but if he would have just kept his mouth shut, they would have got a ticket for a broken tail light, and been on their way.  Why did he feel the need to tell the cop he was carrying?   

In Minnesota, as with many states, there is no known duty to inform, however,  "Localities are allowed to enforce statutes stricter than those enforced at the state level.  Check with those localities and, when in doubt, inform."  so it appears the victim was neither right nor wrong.

If this guy had a history of trouble, I'd probably give the cop the benefit of the doubt. However, this guy has a clean record, a job, a family and was stopped for something minor.
I think the cop just wasn't someone who wasn't up to the job. He panicked when the guy went for his wallet. A major fuck up which has taken a life.

I've been in the exact situation in Florida, on 3 separate occasions, in 3 totally different parts. 1 time the officer just straight up asked me if I carried. The other 2 times I told them I carried and they simply said "where is it?" "Is it on your person?"..all 3 times in center console.

Was no problem. They asked me to get my license. I casually said it's in my back pocket. Cool, no problem. All good.

All 3 times no problem, no ticket all 3 asked was I prior military though (which I've asked several cops does it show I served or something in there system..they all said no..so that's always been a mystery to me). They thanked me for my service and cooperation. 

This cop is an anomaly to that and he's going to be punished severely.

I once got stopped in a school zone (after the school zone END sign)..I sped up to about 35 increasing to the posted 45 then a cop stood in front my car ahead. I just stopped and looked at her. I was headed to a meeting, but I was like whatever.  

Cop asked me if I was familiar with the area...NOPE..going to a meeting. She said I was in a school zone. I said ..umm I see the END school zone sign back there (where I was going SLOOOW). She goes this is a NEW school zone. I look around...no signs, no blinking lights, no marker on pavement..no nothing. I was like OK whatever lol no argument sure...here is my license ma'am.

minutes later I guess the "lead" cop comes over and he told me he was giving me a ticket for no proof of insurance (which I had)..he said just show them the card and nothing would show..ticket gone. I did it ,but I thought that was strange....there was no freaking new school zone sign or anything and they were tagging people left and right..smh whatever.
