Joe Biden says 'we're gonna cure cancer' if he's elected president



WASHINGTON — Former Vice President Joe Biden says that he'll cure cancer if he's elected president.


Speaking at a campaign stop in Ottumwa, Iowa, on Tuesday he discussed losing loved ones before making his promise.

"A lot of you understand what loss is and when loss occurs, you know that people come up to you and tell you 'I understand' if you lose a husband, a wife, a son, a daughter, a family member," he said. "That's why I've worked so hard in my career to make sure that — I promise you if I'm elected president, you're going to see the single most important thing that changes America, we're gonna cure cancer."

The statement drew applause from the audience.

Biden has taken the lead on cancer issues before. He lost his eldest son, Beau Biden, to brain cancer, in 2015. The former vice president was tasked with leading President Barack Obama's "Cancer Moonshot" initiative to find a cure for cancer in the last year of the Obama administration.

After leaving office, Biden helped lead the Biden Cancer initiative at the University of Pennsylvania, which aims to "develop and drive implementation of solutions to accelerate progress in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, research, and care, and to reduce disparities in cancer outcomes." He left that role when he announced his bid for president.

After his comments, Biden was heckled by a protestor. The audience booed the man, but Biden responded calmly.

"No, no, that’s OK. No, no, no," Biden said. "This is not a Trump rally. Let him go."

The former vice president had been going through Iowa on several campaign stops at the same time as President Donald Trump. Biden called Trump an "existential threat" to the United States. Trump, for his part, criticized Biden for his age and for being "weak mentally."

Warren rises to second in California poll




Former Vice President Joe Biden has a small lead over the field of Democratic contenders in California, but Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is hot on his heels and has edged past Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) into second place, according to a new poll.

The survey from UC Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies finds Biden at 22 percent support. Warren and Sanders are in a statistical tie, at 18 percent and 17 percent, respectively.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who will need a strong showing in her home state to compete, is in fourth place with 13 percent, followed by South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 10 percent.

California Democrats will cast ballots earlier than in previous cycles, making the most delegate-rich state in the contest a huge prize for the contenders. Voters will cast ballots on Super Tuesday, on March 3.



The UC Berkeley survey is the latest poll to find Warren rising as she seeks to overtake Sanders in the race to be the party's progressive standard bearer.

A Monmouth University survey released Wednesday of Nevada, which is the third state to vote, found Warren with a clear lead over Sanders, 19 to 13 percent. That was the first public opinion poll to find her ahead of Sanders.

Also on Wednesday, the latest straw poll from the progressive website Daily Kos found Warren surging past Sanders to open up a 34 to 25 percent lead. While that poll is not scientific, it is generally considered an indicator of where the enthusiasm lies with the liberal base.



The new UC Berkeley survey of California found that Harris is the top second choice among California voters, with 21 percent, followed by Warren at 17 percent and Biden and Sanders at 12 percent.

When you combine Warren's support among voters who called her their first or second choice, she has the most support in the entire field, followed closely by Biden, Harris and Sanders.

Just my opinion here but unless someone the caliber of Oprah throws her hat in the ring, Trump will win. America is dumbed down to reality TV. Very few fact check, will accept any information as true if it matches their beliefs. Will discard any as fake news if it doesn't. The Democrats don't have any strong personalities running, the front runner is Washington career politician in his 70's.  Oprah would excite the Democrats as someone they recognize from TV. She could campaign on becoming a billionaire without the help of Daddy and give the same type resume as Trump but without the baggage. I think Americans have moved into a phase of voting along the lines of American Idol, rather than issues. But short of an Oprah the Democrats will get their clock cleaned

They can't even simply denounce right and wrong anymore.  They should have easily said Cortez was wrong for drawing the ridiculous parallels of border camps to concentration camps.  But no.

Instead, they're pushing infanticide, socialism, reparations, calling racism, sexism, nazis, confiscating guns,  etc...….not going to win over the country as a whole, or even the necessary majority.

Got my popcorn ready for this 2 day Democratic party debate lined up for next week. Some early thoughts.

The Good - I think Andrew Yang and Tulsi Gabbard likely solidify their loyal followings with a good showing. Again, the Democratic establishment want little to nothing to do with either but in a field this large they will find their little niche to stand out. Both strike me as principled and steadfast/non wishy-washy in their beliefs(does that still count for something in 2019?) Particularly interested in seeing where Yang stands in a few weeks with his Universal Basic Income message. He is a bit of a dark horse, imo.

The Bad - The cheesy empty platitudes of Beto and Booker in a race to achieve ultimate cringe-worthiness.

The Ugly - Anything associated with Bill de Blasio and his bitter, pretentious, played out anti-America rants.

The Forgettable - The John Hick-a-something guy from Colorado who said socialism wasn't the answer a few weeks ago and was practically booed off stage.

Elizabeth Warren promises reparations for gay couples

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., reintroduced a bill on the campaign trail this week, which could mean $57 million in tax refunds for married LGBT couples.

The Refund Equality Act, which was originally introduced in 2017, would allow LGBT couples who were married prior to the 2013 Supreme Court strike-down of the Defense of Marriage Act in U.S. v. Windsor to amend tax returns from the time that they were married. Prior to 2013, 10 states had legalized same-sex marriage, but were required to file their federal taxes as individuals.

Following the 2013 Supreme Court's decision, married same sex couples from those 10 states were permitted to change their previous tax returns from individual to joint, which entitled them to some federal tax relief. However, the tax return amendments were only permitted for the previous three years. The Refund Equality Act would remove those time limits.

According to a report released this week from the Joint Committee on Taxation, same sex couples married prior to 2013 could potentially be eligible for $57 million if permitted to file jointly from the time they were married.

In a statement regarding the reintroduction of the Refund Equality Act, Warren said, "The federal government forced legally married same-sex couples in Massachusetts to file as individuals and pay more in taxes for almost a decade. It is only right that we change this tax code to make it fairer for all."

Democratic Rep. Judy Chu, Calif., introduced companion legislation last week called the PRIDE Act of 2019 which would alter the federal tax code that currently prevents married couples from amending their returns beyond the previous three years. The change would apply only to same sex couples married prior to U.S. v. Wind.

It will be an interesting election cycle. I'm not far left, and I'm not far right. But I don't think there is a candidate that speaks to the moderates yet that is under 70
