Not really, if a multi millionaire had a fake painting on his wall would anyone suspect it was fake?

he doesnt have it for others, he have it for himself.

I've boughten grey market many times and they honored my warranty when there was an issue which isn't to often.haven't had a problem in years though. As long as card is swiped at AD it's all set.as far as reps go,I have a buddy that buys them and wears them for a while to see if he likes them enough to buy the real ones and I will say he spends about 4-500 on these reps and they are pretty spot on and 99% of people couldn't tell the difference.I have considered it in the past to save money but it's just not the same as I'm buying for myself not for others so I know it's crap and couldn't do it.

Replicas are being made with some genuin parts now.  These Chinese are nifty fuckers. But the good replicas don't cost $50 like those on canal street. Some can go as high as $1500 with fully working flying tourbillons.  Why pay $100k for a tourb when it can be had for $1k

In another thread I mentioned a big birthday coming up, and that I was looking at one of those luxury flights on Etihad or something - consensus on here seemed to judge it a bit wasteful.

I've got a little collection of divers (Seiko, etc.) that make me happy, but it never even crossed my mind to go any bigger.  But the investment side of watches makes some sense to me, and this thread has had me googling a little.  With apologies to the OP for hi-jacking this a little, does anyone have anything to say about one of these please?  (Pre-owned, natch)

They both look great.
The top one has a very clean classy classic look - it's the one I'd choose.

Only I don't have the $....  :'(  ha

LOL Dude, just to be absolutely clear, this would be a one-off for my 50th.  I'm not a GetBig JetSetter  ;D...  I've got a few Seiko 7002 custom builds that are fun, but they are all sub £200.  It was robcguns talking about the lack of depreciation, or even appreciation, of the investment in something a little pricier that caught my attention.  Never even crossed my mind to look at Rolex before.

For example,  that white faced watch above is 9 years old!  And if you look on that website it's worth virtually the same as one only a couple of years old.  So the way I'm now looking at it is take the plunge, look after it/wear it for a few years then see how I feel about trading it in...  that's making a lot more sense to me than burning the cash on a one off journey or something.

I see some more Googling over the weekend!   :D

I'd go for a submariner over a milgause. Appreciating watches are rare, but you won't lose much on a rolex, unless you beat the shit out of it.

Nah, people do things for the acceptance and appreciation and respect of others, we very rarely do anything simply for ourselves.

Appreciate your opinion 10pints, I shall widen the net to submariners as you suggest.  And I'm open to other suggestions around £5k sterling max.

The reason I leaned towards a Milgaus is the incorporation of a Faraday Cage seemed unusual and potentially useful in a post- nuclear war setting.  It may also offer some mitigation against an EMP attack from outer space fritzing it (a la the War of the Worlds reboot)....

Oh, and I'd never seen someone wearing one of these before...  ;D

I'd stick to Milgaus -- as you said its holding its value very well
And you dont see any -- Rarity value --

oh & my 50th came & went - no rolex - couldnt afford one.. :'(

Your £ spend as it pleases you -- And fine watch like that is an investment. enjoy.

Very good points, was forgetting about the impending nuclear war / EMP. The milgaus is rarer, simply because it is a less popular watch, and not far off, price wise, from the submariner. So most go for the sub. The sub is generally perceived to be a more iconic watch, and respected by watch snobs the world over.

That said, whatever gives you the most pleasure is the one for you.

Yes, it'll be very important to have a working watch after a Nuclear bomb explodes.

Very important to own a submariner if you plan to be on dry land all the time.  A diving watch is very important to own ::) .  This is the douche mentality of watches.  Always wanting chronos or diving watches yet never timing anything or diving.

Don't get a Rolex or Omega...Service is recommended every 5 years and is around five hundred bucks, Plus, the watch is so nice that you hesitate to wear it in many situations.
Quartz watches need batteries regularly and 2 times my watches have quit running while getting batteries changed. I just bought a Citizen solar powered diving watch made completely  of titanium that's shock resistant, water proof to 300 feet, has a shatterproof crystal, heat resistant and incredibly accurate and never needs a battery or any kind of service or attention. This watch will outlast me.  $450.00

Download the app "liveauctions" and search watches. It's where I get a lot of old shit, but they have watches and jewelry too and from reputable auction houses.

I actually thought I'd laid it on too thick by adding the War of the Worlds reference... guess I was still too subtle...   ;D
