Phillips armor
The suit of Aramid body armor worn by Phillips during the shootout.
Phillips and Mătăsăreanu both wore aramid-made body armor to withstand police gunfire. Phillips wore a 40-pound homemade suit of body armor consisting of a Type III-A bulletproof vest and groin guard; a load-bearing vest (to store box magazines, especially those for the Heckler & Koch M91A3 rifle); multiple military-grade canteen pouches for ammunition storage; and pieces of body armor taken from spare vests, which protected his groin, shins, thighs, and forearms.
Mătăsăreanu simply wore a Type II-A bulletproof vest, but also included a metal trauma plate. Their armor was powerful enough to prevent penetration by shots fired from handguns and even shotguns.
