Its really all childish talk.

Exactly.  I guess the resident GB f-a-g thinks I'm greedy.  I have plenty of money, I'm merely pointing out that they made her use all her own personal savings first before any government bennies kicked in.  That in itself is the scam.

There are books written about avoiding this. But it takes planning. It is kind of a farce. If you make over 2400 a month in income, retirement, Social Security, you aren't illegible for government assistance with assisted living or Hospice. They will drain every penny you have to pay for it. If you make under that amount you can get a full ride. There are other factors but in a nutshell, it's set up kind of odd. But there are trusts you can set up to defer part of the income to get you below the magic number so the government assistance kicks in

You have seen lots of options in this thread, but without more data no one can give you informed advice.  Counsel that is inapplicable to your situation is useless.  What kind of debt do you have?  How much?  Be specific.  When is it due?  Again, be specific.  Why can’t you pay the bills?  Did you have a recent job separation or have you been unemployed for a protracted period?  Presumably you have no savings available to you.  Why not?  No family or long term friends to borrow from?

The bills you do mention (rent, car) are recurring so paying them now only means they will come back in a month.  What will you do then?  If borrowing from someone is one of your options, you have to be prepared to answer all of the above to your lender’s satisfaction… and you must do so with humility and with no attitude.  Since you have a car driving for Uber or a similar service would appear to be an option (assuming your vehicle is in suitable condition).  If you’ve seen the Muscle Escorting thread you know that is an option (assuming you are in good shape), but it is a very slippery slope and typically does not end well... do not go there if you can avoid it.

Over the last five months I have loaned money to two friends totaling $2300.  One paid me back in two installments.  The other is still making payments.  In each case, they answered every question I posed and articulated a viable path to repayment.  In your case, borrowing from Peter in order to pay Paul does not solve your problem as you are merely transferring the debt.  You need to trim your expenses, live below your means, and raise some extra money… perhaps in a temp job like waiting tables, working as a bartender (again being in shape helps), or driving for a ride sharing service.

BayBGM you seem to have a concrete thought process..........what do you do for a living?.................No homo.

This is pretty much it.   The big issue is seeing this in advance.  In Massachusetts, they look back five years, so you would have had to have the foresight to see it coming, but unfortunately at advanced ages issues can escalate quickly.

Even a modest dementia ward can cost 12,500 / mth, or 150k year.  That can destroy someone's savings and assets quickly.

I don't think Bay is on the mark here.   They've set up the system to make sense for those to distribute assets in advance.  It's not like anyone's advocating living beneath the means they've earned - people can still live in the their house, spend their own money, etc, but not have it in their name.
