One hopes that its more than just pomp and pageantry he is interested in 

From the military personnel I talk to, he's pretty well liked by them, but as has been stated, when a high profile person visits, its a royal pain in the ass. Buddy of mine said when he was in Afghanistan they had to prepare for weeks for someone to come through for a 10 minute photo-op "visit". He said they didn't like it at all.

I can attest to the pain in the ass of an official visit. Presidential visit in a war zone wouldn't be something that people would be preparing for a week for, as it would likely be unannounced until hours before landing.   I really don't care either way if he goes to visit them. I would much prefer making sure they are taken care of while there, and when they return.

He was never visited by Obama, he just said "high profile person". I imagine a presidential visit would be kept quiet until the last minute.

BUT, trust me when I say you can always tell something is going on or a visitor is coming by activities on a base. 0-6's come out of offices to direct and orchestrate small details like dust on a counter. So even if it's not announced, you know something is happening.

Ok, I've been at a base where there was a surprise visit, and being in the Law Enforcement field, would have been one's that had been impacted. Until just less than 90 minutes from the bird landing   it was kept hush hush. I'm not saying generals didn't know, I'm just saying based on my real time experience, it wasn't such a huge hassle. It was in and out. Now, Dos Equis, will follow up with some "I read somewhere" story because he can't be wrong, but that has been my experience in the Military. Now in civilian life, we've had Presidents visit Austin and as a part of the team that had to coordinate that, it was a real pain in the ass a week in advance.

I ALWAYS  preferred no visit from anyone that would make my life more miserable. That's why my original comment was it didn't bother me that he didn't visit. I don't care his reason for not doing it, just fund the VA and we're good
