Plenty of research that cardio is good for your heart. Heart attacks are the number one killer of man. Doctor Cooper alone has studied this for over 50 years and has the stats. The first thing they do after heart surgery for recovery is to put you on a treadmill. True, doing an excess of cardio doesn't extend life. There is a bell graph that shows these guys doing ten miles a day isn't extending life. You have to be careful with years of life and connecting it to a lifestyle because so many other factors play into it.
It seems those that are anti cardio exercise are those who are out of shape and won't admit it. They don't want to put in the effort to do cardio. If you go to a cardiologist for a check up they will put you on a treadmill to do their EKG. If they won't they believe it's too risky because you're out of shape.
If heart attacks are the number one killer of man how will cardio put the odds in your favor?
1. Lowers subcutaneous body fat.
2. Lowers visceral body fat that leads to metabolic diseases.
3. Lowers blood pressure
4. Increases red blood cells
5. Lowers triglycerides (blood fat)
6. Lowers resting pulse rate that indicate the heart muscles strength. Many endurance athletes have a resting pulse rate under 50
7. Increases capillaries of the heart muscle.
8. Lowers blood sugar
9. I will add more at a later date. Late for work.
I could go on but it will never convince anyone that doesn't have the fortitude to put in the work and uses excuses to justify their laziness. In the end the most important life expectancy predictor is genetic. I for one would rather have a shorter life and be in shape and active than what I see all the time. A guy that couldn't run around the block and gets winded walking. I can still out sprint many high school kids so I'm available for a two hand touch game, lol.
Thanks, you just agreed with me.
If you enjoy doing lots of cardio by all means do it. Do you enjoy running or is it strictly something you do for health reasons? You enjoy it, right?
The lifestyle benefits you listed are certainly legit.
However, it won't extend your life by any significant amount, if any.
One of the reasons you gave for doing cardio is you'd rather die younger than be in worse physical shape. That's the same thing steroid users give for using the drugs...they'd rather look great and die younger than live long and look normal.
By the way, I do cardio also. I ride my bike 4-6 days a week for enjoyment. I sprint on it too. Really gets the blood moving. Gets me outside breathing polluted air.
