In 2004, scholars at UCLA revealed that college students involved in religious activities are likely to have better mental health. In 2006, population researchers at the University of Texas discovered that the more often you go to church, the longer you live. ...
This is epidemiological bullshit research. It's like the research showing that being in a hospital is dangerous, because it is associated with a sky-high risk of dying. Well, duh, I hope the intelligent getbiggers see the problem with that conclusion.
Same with going to church. It introduces a massive selection bias. You need to be able to travel to go to church, hence, very sick people will tend to go less to church. Dementia, neuropsychiatric illness, vascular disease, cancer etc etc, all diseases common in the elderly, will tend to make people not go outside much, much less to a social gathering like in a church. Thus, this will show up as a finding indicating that church is beneficial, while the reason may be selection. This is the curse of all observational research.
