Hey, everyone.
I am living and teaching English in Shenzhen, China.
Just felt like sharing some pics. Photography is a big hobby of mine.
Hope you can dig it.

This is a pic of a McDonald's breakfast hotdog. Never tried it but very cheap.

Sorry to say that I don't have a pic of that but I see it on a regular basis. At least, very short shorts. Very popular here.

I don't make very much, only about 1800 US per month, but the cost of living is a lot lower.
I have a BA and a TEFL cert that I got online.
Really you just need the BA, if you want to teach legally (valid work visa).
Even if you don't have that, you can get paid under the table, but there is always risk in that.

Do you have a chinese wife or something?
Why pick China?

Very interesting. Maybe you can share some storiws and more.pics about China from your point of view.

I have a Chinese girlfriend, but I met her after I arrived.
I came here on a scholarship in 2007 (same city), taught kindergarten in 2008 and returned this year. Been trying to learn Chinese and it's more fun to do it here. Plus, I just get bored and need to change my life every so often.
-
What kind of level do you teach (middle school, adults or ?) and what do you think about Shenzhen city?
I am curious as I might go to china to teach myself. I have a BA in english.

Is America (any city) so dull and lack variation/diversity? :D
I just don't understand the appeal (unless you love the certain country's women)

Right now I teach adults, but I've taught kindergarten before. Adults are much easier. Shenzhen is a great city, but it is very new. Thirty years ago this was just a fishing village. The government has invested heavily here. It is a Special Economic Zone. There are many very wealthy Chinese people here. Hong Kong is literally right next door.
You can get a job easily with a BA.

Yeah I'd say so. Drive a few miles in any direction in the US, once you have seen a few streets with strip malls featuring Mcdonalds, Walgreens, Dunkin donuts and some other random companies housed in generic beige buildings with large generic red signage, you'll have a pretty good idea of what the rest of America is like.

How long does it take to get a work visa, and once you have a work visa is it easy to transfer to other companies or other types of work?
I presume the ESL company who you work for sponsored your visa??
Also whats the food shopping like there, I've read that china has a lot of problems with counterfeit food and contamination.
-
to the shittalkers in this topic.. if you open your eyes you might actually learn something.
As for myself, I am very curious about China. Having been there for 18 days in 2007 on vacation, I got quite fascinated with the country and
their vastly different culture from ours.

Shit, man. I really can't remember. I did that course in 2007 and it seems like a lifetime ago.
Don't worry too much about that. If you're seriously interested just google it a bit or try to find out a way just to fake it, especially if you're willing to teach kindergarten.
Mostly, it's if you have a white face and are a native English speaker. It's all a bunch of crap, besides that, to be honest.

The work visa can be obtained before you even come here. You can interview on Skype and get offered a job. I'm not sure if you're American, but if you are, you need to apply for the visa before you leave the States. Other countries are a little different.
Otherwise, you can come on a tourist visa and, once hired, the company applies for the work visa for you.
In China, the work visa is obtained through a Chinese employer. Once they get you a visa, however, you will be under contract for that company (usually a year at a time). You may be able to moonlight, but they probably will want you to be working for them.

Wow, that is crazy! I can't imagine something so illegal happening here.
There are so many police walking around with billy clubs.
I feel a lot safer in China than I do in major American cities. Not saying that doesn't have its drawbacks for the Chinese people (a police state) but I just never see any violence at all.
-
Garebear, tell us about the food - eat anything interesting? I love Chinese food :P
-
Amazing, you've found a working proxy server to enter getbig :o
I can get this site on the regular net but I need the proxy server to see your youtube links.
Some Chinese guy at work gave it to me. I'm terrible with computers but he just put something on a thumb drive and I click on it.
By the way, everyone in China knows that their government censors everything. They are not in the dark about it. Many people have proxy servers, although it's not talked about.

Garebear, tell us about the food - eat anything interesting? I love Chinese food :P
I'm not the biggest fan of Chinese food but I've tried quite a bit. Mostly, I just eat noodles and some rice dishes. I buy most of my food at the grocery store and make it at home. There is plenty of Western food at both restaurants and grocery stores. Tons of McD's, KFC and Pizza Huts everywhere I go. Some Subway. Never seen a Taco Bell here.
Most Chinese dishes leave the head of the animal on the food, so that's a little different. Also, the Chinese do eat dog. They are aware that Westerners look down on it (although I don't personally) so it's a bit difficult to snap a pic of. However, I have seen numerous restaurants where a dog is hanging from a hook in its mouth and the lower half of the body has been sold for food.
I'll try getting one anyway. Just gonna have to be sly.

Are there a lot of restaurants serving other kinds of ethnic food like Indian, Japanese, Lebanese and what not? I couldn't eat Chinese all the time either. Do you have cable TV?
And lets pray gh15 doesn't see your post about dogs getting eaten or he'll shut down the whole mainland ;D

1800 a month is pretty dam good christ that's more than most getbiggers make, and I'm sure things gotta be pretty dam cheap and easy over there.

Thanks, my friend just returned from teaching in south america, I would like to teach abroad someday as well. I'll just google a TEFL or check with my friend. I already have the white face and a BS degree.

I'm not sure because I don't use steroids. However, I've seen some pretty jacked guys here that I assumer are on steroids, although I've never asked. They must be getting them somehow.
I would be very concerned about something like that, thoug. It's true that there are a lot of knock off products and people will do crazy shit just to make money. I was here for that big milk scandal in 2008. A few kids died because people were putting crap in the milk to raise the protein levels after they watered it down.

Never. I grew up with my dad. Lived in Illinois until I joined the Army at 27. Been around quite a bit since then (35 now).
I really thought that I would live my whole life in my hometown. I got a scholarship to study abroad in China in 2007 and wanted to come back.
Not knocking anyone who stays in their hometown, I really miss it sometimes.

It looks a small but pleasant city to live in.
I'm planing to visit China very soon!
Since you living in the city of Shenzhen as a foreigner, do you have to apply for a special pass to go to Hong Kong? I know people from mainland China have to.
-
and I know China is a huge country, so Cities in the North are completely different from those in the South. Have you ever been any northern places in China?

Cool pics Garebear, I spent three weeks in China for business, (Shanghai, guanzhou, chongquing) very interesting culture, different than anything I've ever seen. was hard to get used to the food there though, spent a lot of time at mcdonalds because that was the only western food around in some of the areas I went to!

谢谢你!
Most foreigners get multiple entry tourist visas, which means you can go to Hong Kong as much as you like. If you stay for over a month, you usually HAVE to go to Hong Kong on a tourist visa, since it is considered leaving the country.
You are correct about mainlanders needing a special pass to go to Hong Kong. It's not all that cheap for them either.
-
and I know China is a huge country, so Cities in the North are completely different from those in the South. Have you ever been any northern places in China?
The furthest north I've been is Shanghai, which isn't that far north.
Been here four times and still haven't been to Beijing or the Great Wall. Need to get up there sometime.

Awesome pics, man. My friend is teaching English in Korea right now and loves it. Visited China a bunch of times too and said it was awesome.
China is definitely a place I want to go visit one day. How are the gyms there? That'd be my only concern when travelling abroad for a longer period of time. I need the gym to stay sane.
-
sweet thread bro, keep the pics coming if you have more to share please.
how is the climate where you are at? I have often thought of spending some time working abroad and have come close to going in the past. Do you enjoy your teaching job there, and at what level are you teaching? I knew someone who went and taught kindergarten age kids in hong kong, he hated every minute of it.

There are some really nice gyms, if you wanna spend the money. I go to a cheaper one (about 30 bucks per month). Nothing fancy but it has treadmills and weights, so it works for me.

I live in a climate very similar to Florida. There is pollution in China, but I think it is worse in other cities, especially Beijing.
I enjoy my job teaching adults now. Everyone I teach knows a little English, so it is about improvement. I've taught kindergarten before. I wouldn't say that I hated every minute of it, but it is a LOT BETTER teaching adults. When I taught four year olds, I felt like I was babysitting most of the time.

Not many volumptuous women here, although I do see one once in a while. I'm not sure how to calculate the ratio.

99 percent are great. I get some dirty looks from men when I'm with a Chinese woman, but I guess that's to be expected.
Sometimes I get treated better than other Chinese people. For instance, my landlord let me spread my deposit out over the first two months. He said he wouldn't do this for Chinese people, only foreigners (which made me a little uncomfortable, tbh). A foreigner who comes here is above a lot of suspicion that others might get.

Cool pictures bro...
There should be a lot of suspicion. The CIA sends thousands of people just like you to other countries to "teach" english. Your age and military back round would raise huge red flags I would think...

This is very true. Often I see cops in yelling matches with people who would simply be arrested while in the States.
Another thing the cops will do is come around with a video camera and take video of small infraction. (I've seen them do it for people begging in forbidden areas and one restaurant owner for putting his tables in a public area.)
I don't speak Chinese well enough to understand what they're saying, but it really surprised me. I just figured they would at least be as hardcore as American cops, considering the judicial system is a farce.

I don't have a "deal", I just don't like the "rip off" mentality...and this goes for business practices, especially in Africa and Latin America. It is encouraged by the higher ups.

dont asian consider westerners, especially americans, as gods? I guess women all want to leave their shithole with you for "AMERICA" , and that most men either worship you/want to be friends with the "westerner" or deeply despise you with jealousy?

I don't think the 'God' label is accurate at all.
A lot of Chinese people will want to practice their English with a foreigner.
Less than half the women I've dated want to go to America. There is a lot of opportunity for them here and their families live here as well.
I think that line of thinking is a bit outdated.

http://www.tmz.com/2012/02/16/chyna-porn-hulk-hogan/?adid=hero2#.Tz1fTk6PWSo
Former WWE superstar Chyna is finally getting back in the ring ... taking on 9 dudes at the same time ... except it's for a porno movie.
TMZ has learned ... Chyna was totally serious about pursuing a XXX career ... and just wrapped up on a Royal Rumble-inspired flick in which she locks up with a bunch of dudes who all look like famous wrestlers ... including a wannabe Hulk Hogan, wannabe Triple H, wannabe Ric Flair and more.
Weird thing is ... Chyna and the REAL Triple H actually dated for a while before he married Stephanie McMahon back in 2003.
The WWE obviously has no affiliation with the Vivid Entertainment flick. We called the wrestling titans for comment, but haven't heard back yet.

Do you miss being around other races?
Yeah, sometimes. I see a lot of white people at work (other teachers).
I saw a black guy yesterday, but I sometimes go weeks without seeing white people. Of course, there are foreigner hangouts (Starbucks, ex-pat bars) if that's your thing. Still, there are very few black people in China.
Sometimes, some Chinese people from the western provinces who visit here, will want to take a picture with me. I think I might be one of the first white people they have seen. It's a bit awkward.
As to the booty question, most Chinese girls are skinny, but there are probably more voluptuous ones than you might think. I saw a fat ass when I was out running this morning. ;D

It was a nice ass. Just about perfect without flowing over.
The hard drink in China is 白酒 (bai jiu) which translates literally to white wine. But this shit is stronger than whiskey. I can't stand it but it's a big Chinese tradition and they always want you to drink it. A lot of Chinese have to 'save face' by not turning down baijiu, but I will turn it down in a second. I can literally smell it from ten feet away.
I really like Qingdao beer and it's very cheap here. I can get about a 40 oz for 80 cents.
I'm not even sure what Wushu is, but I'm guessing it's some kind of kung fu? I wouldn't even know where to learn something like that. Even if I saw it advertised, I would assume it's bullshit.
The Chinese know the foreigners stereotypes of China very well and will take you on something like that. A lot of shopping in China is done through bargaining, but they will always up the price if they see a white guy. It's best to take a Chinese friend with you and hide around the corner while they buy it for you.

garebear: Has your stomach gotten used to the chinese cuisine or do you routinely get diarrhea (serious question) ?
Only time I got that was from food poisoning.
I don't eat a lot of Chinese food. Maybe about 25 percent of my diet is Chinese and that's the really simple stuff - noodles, rice, eggs. I'm actually not a big fan of Chinese food and hardly ever eat it in the States.
There's a ton of foreign food available if you live in a big city.

Been to all of those cities except Chongqing. I live near Guangzhou, in a city called Shenzhen. Not many have heard of Shenzhen but it's nearly twice the population of Chicago.

Oh yeah... I'm 6 feet And at the time I was 255 lbs.... some guy kept calling me Mike Tyson!!!! Lol but I definitely stuck out like a sore thumb there!
You are not missing much in chongqing....its mainly an industrial town, I was there visiting factories. I've heard of Shenzen, a bunch of the components our company was buying were shipping out of the port in Shenzen.... I always assumed it was a part of Guangzhou.

I'm not the best person to ask about Chinese food. I've actually visited the US with Chinese students for my job, and they tell me the US version usually sucks. I'm very picky about Chinese food, but I can get a good bowl of noodles here for about one US dollar.
Prices are pretty much the same when considering fast food, but a lot of American food is much more expensive either because it's imported or they know that foreigners will pay much more. For instance, a slice of cheese (at the supermarket) is about 80 cents.

The Monolithic Fallacy
In today’s English, stereotype is a dirty word. Its connotation is so closely tied to racism that it is effectively considered a synonym. But it is ironic to see how prevalent many statements are made in the same vein when considering ideology.
The polarized atmosphere of American politics seemingly necessitates that we take a position on an issue before it even becomes prevalent. But that’s not the worst of it.
Since living overseas I’ve noticed that the misconception is self-multiplying. Perhaps you could imagine a liberal, gun-owning friend (yes, they exist) sticking up for the second amendment. But, since living in China, I’ve come to notice that many Americans (don’t worry, I’m not going to make the mistake myself of saying all) seem to think that all Chinese people are in love with their government and support it one hundred percent. That is simply not the case.
‘The government’ is a sensitive topic in China, of course. I don’t want word to get around that some foreign teacher, especially one from a country on such shaky terms with the CCP, is riling up students in an English class. I don’t feel it’s my duty to come to foreign countries and do such things, and I realize it would be totally ineffectual, less than a drop in the bucket. I’ve also got a kid on the way and put that way above any politics that isn’t life or death.
But once a week, I teach a current events class, just general news from around the world. So often it happens that we get to talking about laws and ‘government officials’ while broaching different topics. More often than not, I find myself steering the lesson away from controversy.
Of course, these comments are just from structured classes. Too many Americans assume too much about what Chinese people know and what their opinions are on any topic. Just today, someone was telling me, he didn’t know if I had heard, but that there was some trouble in Beijing in 1989. (I got off that topic like it was going out of style. ) I’ve cringed with segued intentions at someone telling me that ‘the Chinese soccer team was a joke and I love China but I hate the government’. ‘Oh, sorry to hear that, what are you doing this weekend?’ Was my perfect response.
If given a monolithic option, all people will naturally fall into it. When I was an exchange student in 2007 here in China, someone asked me why America invaded Iraq for oil. Without even thinking, I laughed hard. I thought it was so funny that this person didn’t realize the debate within the American spectrum, where, at the time, it was such a point of contention. It seemed such a simplified question, ignoring so many millions of different opinions, that it surely must be a joke. Now when I read so many comments from Americans, I don’t find it so humorous. I don’t mean this to sound that Americans are worse than Chinese people, because, given a free press, that’s probably the opposite. But to see all as one is now firmly a mistake in my mind.
