The pool itself is prone to developing leaks and algae blooms, which are remedied by periodic upkeep but which tend to come back eventually, per NYT. The pool has undergone several renovations since its opening in 1922, including an estimated $34 million job when former President Barack Obama was in office to reengineer the space with a new circulation and filtration system that pulled water from the nearby Tidal Basin rather than the city's drinking water, according to The Associated Press.

The renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool ordered by President Trump ultimately cost taxpayers more than $14 million and seems to have been for nothing because the paint is already peeling off and the algae returned almost immediately. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool reopened on June 6th, three weeks ago.
