Yeh - I’ll be honest when I saw his contract my first thought was “poor feller better manage his money right. What an insult to only be paid 70 mil a year” I mean I think I earned that last month, but honestly I can’t be bothered with petty shit like counting my $$

Dumbest fucking thing I’ve ever heard. 70mil a year for 10 year to throw and hit a ball. I’m sorry but it’s all you asshole sports fans getting these FUCKBAGs their salaries. I wish mass shooters would target pro sports players. Thats what I would do if I was gonna shoot a place up.

And yes I am jealous but I also think this money could be used in a much better way than to pad some chinks pockets. I don’t mind Asian people but I had to say chink in this instance.

Amazing. That is the largest contract in baseball history. I wouldn't be surprised if over the span of those 10 years he crosses over the $1 Billion mark by way of separate endorsements and sponsorship deals.

I believe it is well deserved. He is Major League Baseball's first two-way player since Babe Ruth. The man is a phenom and a complete gentleman that shows the highest level of sportsmanship every single time he steps foot on the baseball field. He was the American League MVP and has held this title for 2 straight years.

Had it not been for his injury, he would have easily been the homerun leader. Additionally, he is a pretty great pitcher as well (wouldn't call him the best pitcher in the MLB).

This past season he made it fun for me to watch baseball (not since the best days of the Yankees have I been a fan of the MLB). Shohei had somewhat of that Michael Jordan effect. He made it fun to watch regardless of whether his team couldn't get it together. Moreover, going to the Dodgers is a great idea. I'd say that by stats alone they could be called the 3rd best team in the MLB (second best in the National League).

he should donate at least half of that to charities of his choice, but the problem is... do the donations actually all go directly to the charities?

i'm absolutely certain they have a cure for cancer but they won't release this cure because they can't make such huge $$$ from thier cancer "treatments" to sick and dying individuals these fucks deserve to be tortured very slowly and to see the daily pain and fear in thier eyes with each "treatment" bestoyed upon them

Well deserved? You are as fucked as the people paying him OMR, no disrespect. But in this instance I just can’t fathom anyone saying it’s well deserved, 700 million to play a child’s game? You fucking kidding me?

Well deserved salary for a sports player of his caliber in my world would be 250-500k and even that is ridiculous.

LOL at all the “Right Wing” posters CRYING about Ohtani’s salary.

It was calculated in a free market and will be paid ENTIRELY by the private sector.

FYI.

You’re not “Right Wing”….you were BRAINWASHED by Donald Trump.

Doctors and surgeons do very well. If they made that much it’s means you’re paying more for medical. Police/fireman should be paid that much with tax payer money? At least these sportsmen are actually generating income. If people didn’t watch or go to games they would not make this type of money.

In a who saw this coming moment, I agree with OAK. Its not Ohtanis fault or really anyones "fault". The market has dictated what he will get paid and hey, good for him. He is the best at what he does and the baseball industry has said hey, this is what he will get paid, and Im totally ok with that. People say ohhhh theres homeless blah blah he gets 70 mill a year,....Im not that guy. Good for him for being the best and making that money. Zero negative response from me

You mean 46???? 😩😩😩. Nobody mentioned Trump you loon. Get more vaccines and boosters. That way when you get Covid you won’t die. I just give my body proper nutrition and do my best to enhance its ability to fight. So far zero vaccines and COVID with MILD symptoms 2 years ago.

Rob - I gotta disagree with you here man. Do I think it’s worth it in the most basic sense of the word - NO. But so long as MLB is raking in the insane revenues then absolutely he deserves that % of the overall revenue. The kid is fckn amazing player. He can strike out the side and hit a grand slam in the same inning!!! That’s insane talent.

Now - do I think MLB tickets are WAY over priced? Again - in the basic sense yes. I fckn LIVE baseball and have a couple very close friends who played in the majors. One for well over a decade. He never made that kind of money, but he wasn’t the draw that Ohetani is.

I am a pure capitalist. The solution is NEVER to enforce artificial restrictions on the market. But I GUARANTEE you that if John Q Public stopped supporting with their hard earned dollars, salaries would drop like it was hot. (Did that sound cool? It did in my head)

Know this - if in fact these salaries are bloated as we think, there will EVENTUALLY be a market correction.

I don’t care good for him.My Rangers finally won a World Series after 51 years of killing me. I told the baseball gods to just give me one and I will never ask for another.Of course we will get deGrom back next year so who knows.

Ohtani makes the owners of baseball huge money so he shou!d be paid for it.

The owners are raking it in.

However, nobody is forced to buy tickets, watch, buy merch, and gamble on the games.

Surgeons make a fortune now.

Cops and firemen do quite well also.

I'm probably one of the biggest baseball fans here, but even I think LA is bidding against themselves here, and they went a little apeshit.  The contract is stupid, and with the deferred money, I think we'll see some limitations put in in the future.

The thing is though it's more than hitting and throwing a ball - he'll generate enough revenue to pay for the contract.  The major market teams lost out on over 60 million a year when the don't make the playoffs, and he is one of the best players ever.  He capture so much Japanese market $ as well.

I just think they've finally crossed the line.  The are certain markets that are DOA every year before the first pitch (sorry Abe) but this will make even more have no chance.

All good points.

Couple caveats - he can't be a two way player until he gets his second Tommy John surgery, so they will be paying him not to play if they want this.  The price tag means he has to.

If he wasn't hurt, we have to assume Judge wasn't hurt, and Judge would have won the HR title.   :)

Can Ohtani stay healthy?

He will not pitch in 2024 since he is recovering from arm surgery.

He may never be the same pitcher.  He can still hit though which is his biggest plus.

Big gamble for the Dodgers on this one.
