385 about 2yrs ago. Though with my shoulders these days I never go above 225 flat bench and 200 incline dumbbells (100lbs each hand)..in all honesty I don't even remember the last time I flat benched. I feel I get way more pump doing pushups for warm up then go incline DB then cables. Shoulders don't like dips either :-\

I don't bench anymore. I think it's an inferior exercise. It makes the shoulder joint tight and inflexible due to it's inherent limiting range of motion.
The bench press really hasn't been around that long. I can imagine when lifting began. 1st it was let's power clean a weight and press it over head. Someone said, that's to much work. Another came up with seated press bench so you can exercise sitting down. Then some real lazy guy said is there any way we can lie in a bed and press? That's when the bench press was born.
When misguided person asks what can you lift they are always talking about the bench. I'm more impressed finding out a person's power and strength by how much they can lift over head from the ground. If a guy can power clean a weight and push jerk it over head it will tell you more about his athletic attributes than any bench press. I never met a guy who could put up a good power clean who wasn't fast with a great vertical leap.

I train at Supertraining gym in Sacramento with Mark Bell...Most all of our guys have well over 400lb competition bench presses...No one gives a shit lol. How much do you squat? How much is your total?
Why would I lie about a 400lb bench press rofl...My boy Phil Brewer just benched 500 weighing 165 rofl...400 is a high school bench press.

My muscular endurance doesn't work anything like that. I would press 60kg (133lbs, heaviest dbs there are) for 12 controlled reps for 1 or 2 sets. After that I drop off a cliff to 8 or so reps then 5/6. I'd be lucky to maintain 12 reps second set, but I only rest about 60-90 seconds between sets.
Most I benched was 170kg on first cycle (age 20) when I took deca and was moving from powerlifting. Stopped powerlifting, stopped deca (high bp) and never tried to get near that again. Did 140kg for 9 reps a few months back but have chronic inflammation of tendon in shoulder now. No coincidence, no more heavy benching for me.

Have naturals in my gym benching 175kg (single) at 75kg. Most look like T-rexes though, I have long arms (74" reach). I always lie when people ask what I bench in clubs/shops etc (I could say 250kg they would believe me so why not) or switch the subject to deadlift.

405 is a gateway weight....like the 600lbs pull...not sure what the squat would be maybe 500 as most feds consider the 1500 lbs total as the floor. 405 at 275.....I eat a pizza and my shitty bench goes up 15 lbs.

Prolonged periods of heavy benching really are only necessary if you are a powerlifter. And even among powerlifters the bench is responsible for more injuries than the squat or dead. The problem I see with the bench is that unless you are very well built for it (barrel chest, T-rex arms) then over time it will put a lot of strain on the shoulder girdle and the very small stabiliser muscles around that joint.
Having said that most people you see benching have atrocious form and are an injury waiting to happen (flared elbows, bouncing weight off chest). The best thing for long term shoulder health if you have to/want to bench is to leave your ego at the door and bring your grip in to shoulder width (about 18-20 inches apart). This grip is commonly called "close grip" but its actually not - a true close grip bench has the hands much closer together. The guys you see bouncing 265 off their chest with their arse up in the air would get stapled by 225 taking a shoulder width grip, bringing the bar to the chest, pausing briefly and pressing up.
But then again I have a shitty bench so I am biased against it. My push press is pretty much on par with my bench... :(

today's supposed to be chest day and I dunno till I get into it whether my 3-4 working sets will be 315 for sets of 6-8 or 365 for 5-6.... hell, if I dont' get a big meal in while I'm doing laundry in a few mins, it may only be a 275 for 15 day. lol.
I'm a shitty bencher, btw. shoulders aren't great and nerve damage in chest from broken sternum killed any dreams of a 500lb bench many years ago.

I managed a 365 bench 3 weeks ago at my last comp. The most I benched during the 9 week cycle was 315 for 3. I went up to a 335 with a slingshot a few times but that was it. I took out a lot of shoulder work due to injury...from benching. I do a lot of closegrip work and I use the shit out of the slingshot. Using it paused sorta defeats its purpose but it keeps my shoulders stable and I come down with a lot more authority. My raw bench looks a 1000lbs push with a 3 ply shirt on....1 inch per minute decent. I friggen hate the exercise. I hate it so much that at that meet I got dinged on my second attempt because I unracked...bro benched the shit and racked before a single command was given.

BTW a 365 bench at the meet while never going above 315 in your training is a great example of training optimally. You don't need to max out in training constantly to get stronger. Every time I try to push my training hard and overestimate my training maxes I ALWAYS end up making less progress and going back to where I started.

I disagree, especially if you are a raw bencher. An equipped bencher would be more worried about lats, rear delts, and especially triceps since in equipped benching the chest plays very little role and triceps and stabilizing muscles like lats, rear delts etc play a bigger role. If you bench without a shirt, you are going to be using your chest a whole lot unless you use a narrow grip and even then you are going to be using your chest somewhat. Scott knows this as he tore his pec pretty good trying to best his raw bench press record.

Best to date is 425lbs/193 kg at about 235lbs, just recently hit 405 for a solid triple, squats/deads are cool and a better test of strength overall but man there is nothing like a big bench press.

It all depends on how you use it. Its no more a gimmick then boards. I replaced boards with the slingshot. More as a safety device then as something for a future method or to increase my bench. I use it a lot for close grips because I have a torn labrum and my regular bench and closegrip aren't a lot different.

I benched 172.5kg in compeition 5 weeks ago.
Minor pec tear trying 175kg on 3rd attempt, just went back heavy benching yesterday and could still feel it, not sure how good it will heal up.
Would get 175+ outside of competition in a gym with typical bounce/no pause.

I used to love the bench press. Still like it but after tearing chest i can no longer hit the heavy weights. At my peak I was able to Hit 315x8-12 reps for 3 sets. My best single was 445 @225bw. I tore my chest prepping 315 quit a few years back by forcing up a rep in poor form. The muscle tore,sounded like a wet towel being ripped apart. Currently in the last few months I have been working back on the bench. Do not know what current max is but I put 260 for 10 up on my last set. I never used gear,always benched raw. Never saw the point in bench shirts, real,raw power is the only true test of one's strength. I would love to be able to Hit the heavy weights again. I get pretty nervous when I go up in weight, baby steps at this point.

I also disagree. Strongest man I ever knew was my Drill Instructor at USMC Boot. Looked liked he had two guys on a headlock his barrel chest was so big. Told us he doesn't lift weights because the Corps didn't issue them to him ::)
Anyways at the end of boot he made good on a promise to do 100 pushups with a recruit sitting on his back. He didn't slow down till around 70 but still pushed out 100. I'm betting he could push 400lbs or more on bench

I'm seeing number 405lbs being used often here... Outside of powerlifting ground, benching 405 is a big deal and not so common, in my opinion... Unless there are a lot of big fatasses with short arms, using shitty form, and sometimes with a spotter doing half the work... Most i have seen is a guy in my gym benching 452lbs (205kg) for 4-6 reps, at around 190lbs with medium arms... Half reps mostly, still holding and moving such weight is impressive...

But for who ever said a 315 was not a big bench you are freaking CRAZY!!! I would be willing to bet less then 10% of people that lift weights and go to the gym on a consistent basis can do a legit 315 bench press. I own and operate my own gym and other then my power lifters there are only a handful of guys who can bench 3 plates a side. 315 is a good solid bench, 405 is a great bench and 500 plus raw is GOD LIKE to most people!!!! Just saying!!!

For the last 29 years I started my chest workouts on the flat bench. After giving my shoulders a year off from benching, I just started again 2 weeks ago. I thought I would never be able to bench ever again. I was happy yesterday when I put up 185 for 10 strict reps. My goal is to work back up to benching my bodyweight (currently 205lbs) for 10 reps. Shoulders feel good so far.

x2 315 is a very strong bench that most will never achieve even with a good effort devoted to it.
Everyone acting all "it's no big deal everyone in my gym does it" is full of it or is speaking from a very narrow perspective that doesn't generalize to your average gym lifter. I think someone in this thread even made this claim of 405 ::)

I also find it amusing how everyone's reported max benches on the internet are multiples of 2x45-lb plates (e.g. 315, 405) about 99% of the time :D
The exception to this is that nobody reports a max of 495 since rounding it up to 500 looks a lot more impressive .

Always throw the 2.5 on when deading if 495-500 is the weight range...technically my last bench comp bench was 363.7 or 165Kg's.

Regardless of bodyweight, if you're pressing over 400 pounds totally drug-free, you are a serious rarity. Steroids can make a ridiculous difference in how much you bench press.
(405 at around 275 pounds bodyweight is simply awesome if you're drug-free.)
P.S. Benching isn't all that harmful to your shoulders IF you know how to bench press PROPERLY. The technique that usually gets trashed around here with the tucked elbows, medium grip and arched back (not ridiculously arched, obviously) is how heavy pressing should be done if shoulder health means anything to you. In other words, placing the shoulders BEHIND the chest throughout the repetitions.

Yes, its almost like they stop benching altogether once they reach a nice round milestone so never progress after this point. :D
Also, a lift needs to be seen by others in order for it to be truly judged.
For instance, a few weeks back I saw a guy "squatting" 405. I use the word "squatting" in inverted commas because it basically consisted of him un-racking the bar under immense strain, bending his knees a few inches seven or eight times and then re-racking it.
This guy will probably then go brag to his mates about how he squats 405 for reps. :D

The bench itself never hurt me, but since I tore my pec muscle STRETCHING (yes, crazy huh) I cant bench pain free anymore. I benched elbows in, tuck, 1 second pause etc but its still no good anymore. Thankfully incline and DB is pain free.
agree on the weight numbers, even when I was training at Gold's Venice there was usually only one or two other guys who would go over 4 plates with me on the bench and they were 260+ NPC superheavy monsters. 405 is something you hardly ever see done properly in any gym outside of PLing gyms.
that was using the slingshot... I could do 405 for 5 without it at the time, and for 3 with a pause. It was a complete waste of time imo.

Yes this is so true. In fact the number of people you seeing do a legit bench with 315 is very rare, probably LESS than 10%. And by legit bench I mean lowering the bar under control, pausing briefly on the chest and pressing up to lockout (obviously with no spotter touching the bar at any point). This trend of dropping the bar and bouncing it off the chest is not a legit bench in my opinion; it's like doing quarter squats or rocking barbell curls.

Yep anybody that thinks 315 is a weak bench does not know what they are talking about. Same goes for anything over 400. I worked very hard as a natural, have never taken p.e.d.s I am 6'2 with longer than average arms. I remember going to a local bench meet with some people from my gym,some from others. When they got around to loading 315 and each (that could) put it up my turn came. After noticing some of their form and performance I decided to show my power. I took the bar off rack unassisted lowered it to my chest and paused.......long enough for them to think I was buried by the weight. When they moved in to help me I rammed it up hard and fast.
The one training method I used for this power was to bench in a power rack and always work a few sets for raw power by starting at the bottom with an 80 percent max weight. I would arm it up once rest one minute repeat rest one minute repeat over and over until I could no longer push up from the bottom. At my best I could incline 315 for 5 close grip 365 for 3-5 max . As much as I trained for a big bench naturally and raw I really enjoyed reps and sets with over 300 pounds. I really would get puffed up from it especially after doing heavy bent over barbell rows.

"Bouncing off the chest" bench pressing is so late 1990s. The vast majority of people in the gym today quarter rep weight that would bury them for one quality full rep.

I worked up to 415 ... and some guys from my work (who were there) started saying, So-and-so from work can press 400, and, Yeah, so-and-so from work can shoulder press 400 ... And then, towards the end of my session, this juiced "physique competitor", who says he's prepping for a contest in six weeks, says, When I am heavy in the off season at around 245, I do about 450 for six.
I know the first two guys from work for whom my workmates make those claims. The first is some 170-pound dude who is muscular but would get buried under 400. The second is a husky-looking fellow who'd suffer a crushed cranium if he attempted shoulder pressing 400 (the guy who made the claim says it was on a machine ... oh, brother). And the third guy, with the 450 for six claim? I SERIOUSLY doubt this.
Just another wank talking out his ass.
Why is it when someone who has a decent bench is lifting, all these claims come out of the woodwork from those in the peanut gallery?
Yeah, my uncle's best friend's cousin can bench 650 for eight, dude! ::)

I hit 140kg x 8 on monday.
Last competition I hit 150kg with a pause (which felt ridiculously easy).
6'1 and about 228lbs atm. I am fat though, prob 14% body fat (want to cut down but I want to hit 300kg deadlift first). My strength drastically tails off once my bodyfat is sub 10%.
Which leaves me with a conundrum; either chase strength gains at 12-15% body fat (which I must admit is more enjoyable than pure bodybuilding). Or focus on titrating calories down and becoming sexy once again.

I can count on one hand the number of guys who did a legit bench with over 315.
Unsurprisingly, in the real world, most people have no idea what strong is. This might be partly because of equipped lifting (i.e. 1200 pound bench press etc) but it is also simply highlights the fact that people don't actually train with heavy weights - if they did they would know that a 405 bench press is waaaay above average.

That's actually a real situation with me, but I don't feel the need to say what I used to do. Nobody's ever given me a trophy or money because I used to bench more.

A 315 bench is still impressive, you don't see it that often , yes it happens, but not all that often generally speaking. If you train at a serious gym then it's probably everyday occurrence, but at most "regular" gyms with regular gym rats, 315 is still a big deal. Take a walk down the mall or go out to eat and look around, MOST of those people would be crushed with 315, I have said nothing new I know but it surprises me how many people laugh at a 3 wheel bench

I've got partners that try to reset to their biggest bench when we lay down a new cycle of programming...no dude...what did u bench on the platform, that's how much u bench period, especially if its what everybody has seen in training and you didn't get dinged for an early rack or something. People will come out of their way to say how much their cousins brother benches....never had anybody say that about a deadlift..or squat.

You could always compromise, m'man. I don't think you'd lose a ton of strength if you slowly came down a bodyfat percentage, or even two; it's all about planning and how you burn it off. With a decent lifting regimen you should at LEAST be able to maintain during/after that.
Regardless, you're keen to hit that big pull first. Do that, then think about fricking about with your diet. Otherwise, I reckon you'll never forgive yourself.

545 raw touch n go was the most I've ever seen in person in a 'normal' gym ( a Goodlife in London Ontario) from a huge 350lb block of farm boy jello who would always claim to be natural.

I've been doing nothing but push-ups for almost the past year. I'm up to almost 70 without stopping, although I do rest/pause at the top of the rep when needed and am doing so between every rep towards the end. I do this three times a week and try to add one rep/week. I'm interested to see how it has affected my barbell bench, which I have never been especially good at.

Good idea. Make your NERB reservations now. Tickets will be on sale around April 1st and it looks like this will sell out fast. The MMA crowd usually fills the events they have in that area and its usually only around 2500 people. They told me that with an event of this nature, we should double that number and that’s not counting the Powerlifting and Bikini Contest.

315 is a sold bench. When consider how many people do the bench press as a whole and how many can actually ever get 315, I would bet it is only about 3-4%.
I actually tried 3 plates a couple of days ago (I'm at my highest bodyweight now) and it was tough, but I brought it up (with the aid of a spotter). It used to be so much easier back when I was 19-27. I'm 36 now and feeling weaker. Muscles just don't respond the way they used to.

the realization phase or de-load whatever you call it allows for a period of super compensation. This is when you peak for a meet. Your lifts will be a lot more than you would normally be capable of. Add cheque drops, pre lift physche ups, these guys are getting a lot out of their lifts. Nothing against the sport but to me that's bullshit. ..true strength is what a guy can do any given day, at any given time. That's the reason ronnie and kevin levrone's lifts were so impressive to me. These guys were tired...detrained..not even training for strength and reaping 500 like paper.

My best bench at a bodyweight of 192 was 315 for 10 reps. 6 of which I did completely on my own 4 with slight spot.
Single, I did 350 at about the same weight. I never trained for max lifts always trained as a Bodybuilder.

I'll bet $7.35 that if the majority of you guys would train for 2 weeks with a powerlifter.. a legit powerlifter, you'd put 40lbs+ on your bench just by adjusting your technique... tucking your elbows, arch your back, drive with your feet, drop the bar down low below the nipples, "breaking the bar" (squeezing the fuck out of it, none of this 'suicide grip' nonsense) creating external rotation, exct ect ect...

should use that same form for everything from 1-3 to 6-9 to 8-12 to 15-20.
tweaked my elbow somehow today, so only hit 250 for 25 on the decline, then 225 for 20, after that I was toast.. only had about 1500 kcals up till then, finished out with a couple sets of 185 for 20 with an elbows-flared/bber-style form... then off to the machine presses/flyes
225-275 for sets of 20 are a helluva lot more taxing for me than sets of 365 for 1-3.

My best bench at a bodyweight of 192 was 315 for 10 reps. 6 of which I did completely on my own 4 with slight spot.
Single, I did 350 at about the same weight. I never trained for max lifts always trained as a Bodybuilder.
That was a long time ago.

Stopped Barbell Flat Benching and Incline benching a long time ago. Will only use Smith machine rarely go over 225. Still love Incline dumbbell flyes and cable crossovers. Flex used to make an Incline Bench machine that had a bench that was on a 30 degree angle that was awesome. Worked upper chest without burning your shoulders out before your chest.

That's just what I did last Friday after not pressing any exercise for months. I stopped at 4 or 5 because of a tweak in my injured shoulder, but could have easily done more. No idea how many more though. Could have had 10 total in me, could have been 14-15. And speaking from experience that would put me at or over 315 again -- I suck at high reps. But I'm not going to live dangerously. Just a slow buildup of 10 Lbs per session, and see where it takes me. World record by September. ;D
FYI: years ago I benched 315x1 the first day after coming back from a 5-year layoff, so I'm not bragging but lamenting! >:(

As has been mentioned several times in this thread by several different posters, 315 is in general a very strong bench for an "unassisted" lifter using good form and no spot.

I did the Sean Phillips "how to increase your bench 50lbs in 7 weeks" It actually worked. 315 was the "goal" weight, but ended up getting 325 very smoothly, and got 335 half way. Did a burn set of 225 for 18 after, and remembered it feeling like 100lbs.
But, constant heavy shoulder training, improper warmups and routines, etc....have taken their toll. Had one shoulder surgery last year, and need the other done. I'd like to try the routine again, but am concentrating on more active stuff.
315 * 5 at 180 is great, by the way.

I weigh a reasonably solid (for a powerlifter) 275 pounds. I am 44. (And for those who shriek "Permabulker!", I have competed in three bodybuilding contests. Funny how a majority of those who would charge such a thing haven't ever come near a competition stage. ::))
I can do a tight set of eight or 10, each repetition paused, with 315. Three hundred and sixty-five for a solid and paused five or six.
No drugs or hormones. No spot.
Barring injury, my max should be somewhere in the 430-440 range by this Fall.

I had pretty much been lifting instinctively for the longest time. The only "advice" I ever got was from the occasional older type guy in the gym. Getbig was and still is the only weightlifting site I have ever really followed and I didn't even start lurking here til 2007. I've probably bought 2 or 3 bodybuilding magazines my whole life.
So just basic stuff like driving through the balls of the feet, establishing a good base with your back, shoulders in tight and bar placement below the nipple were all concepts that I never even really considered but helped to make me progress and gave me more confidence in my lift.

Okay, as they say in Dutch: "meten is weten" [lit.: measuring is knowing]. Today I tried benching for the second time this year, just to see if I can hit 315 at all.
After first training shoulders and tris to failure, I proceeded to bench the following in a grand total of 6 minutes:
10xbar,
5x135,
4x225,
1x265,
1x305 (very easy),
10x225 (stopped at 10 because I had forgotten to breathe all 10 reps. ;D).
Could probably have done 355 if I'd tried it fresh. Actually moderately pleased with that. Hitting the lateral raises and tricep extensions hard has been good for me.
[edit] Bodyweight unknown, afraid it's around 260 now. And not a solid 260. :-X

if you don't have access to legit powerlifters, at least spend some time watching some louie simmons vid's.... well, watching AND listening.
wide grip (shorter range of motion... think sumo-dead)
squeeze the shit out of the bar, no 'suicide grip'.
'break the bar'... imagine breaking a stick/tree branch/pencil... it causes external rotation and brings your elbows in
bring you elbows in to your body
arch the shit out your lower back
drive with your feet... I drive with the balls of my feet, since I have long legs I 'tuck them back' to get arch in my back so my heels aren't on the ground usually... pinching your glutes helps drive feet into the ground... the bench should be a full-body movement.. sorta. not just chest/tris/delts.
bring the bar to your lower chest or even upper stomach... your forearms should be 90degrees to the floor (perpendicular to your body or the bench), hwo far the bar goes down depends on your arm length.

Basically, understand the importance of positioning your shoulders behind your chest. Pinch your shoulder blades together and keep a moderate arch (unless you desire to develop an extreme arch, as some do) in your back. And, as said, tuck your elbows.
Oh, and has also been said, have your lower pec line/upper stomach as the touch-point.
Bam ... more poundage moved and less shoulder stress.

running 150-200mcg/day now... when I remember to do the shots. lol.. which is 4-5 days a week (in the morning or just before bed, in 1 shot)
thin skin. full muscle bellies. crazy vascularity, esp in the legs.
I love igf1 DES. training back for example, i'd put 100mcg in the lats, 100mcg in the teres, and 100mcg in the traps (100mcg each side), for arms 100mcg in the bicep, 50mcg in the brach, 50mcg in the lateral head , 100mcg in the long head, and 25mcg or so in the top of the forearm, quads i'd just pick one head and put 150mcg in. chest is just 150mcg.
if I could get a better price, i'd double those doses.

everything I say/recommend comes from personal experience. if I say the sides/risks from running 2g/wk or 3.5g/wk for a couple years are overblown(by guys who are only relaying what they read on the internet), it's because I did it.

you can run 2g of test/wk with 150mg anadrol and still be lean, hard, and vascular. (actually, I believe anadrol gives much less water retention than dbol... but anyways).

I know some pretty big guys with good physiques, who look really good after they finish a show...I see them 2 months later once they start their offseason with a heft dose of nandrolone and they look way worse. The guys I know who do look good in the offseason don't really use deca. The extra few lbs deca might give you over EQ or something, the shutdown that comes with it, just doesn't seem worth it to me

not really, since I know it's temporary. the body can always change. if I don't 'need' to be 'ripped', I don't see a reason in staying ripped year 'round. I spent most of a year at sub-5% and it sucked. if I don't have something coming up where I need to be lean/hard/dry, I'd prefer to be a bit puffy. I'm still lean, as I still have abs and serratus and whatnot, but holding water 'feels better'.. joints feel beter and everything feels 'tighter'. the reason I retired from bodybuilding in '04/05 was because I was burned out. I like being able to eat whatever I want, whenever I want. believe me, if I could get 'fat', I would, I really don't care. getting fat doesn't come easy to me no matter what I eat.
the puffy-deca waterweight falls off pretty quickly, so I can be a puffy 235 one day and skip a deca shot that week and next week I'm 230 and I look much bigger because the separation comes out.. having that in the back of my mind makes me not 'freak out' when I'm holding water. I can do 'before and after' pics that are 2 days apart that look like 2 months apart.
I WAS running 6g a week.. 4g test enan and 2g deca with dbol preworkout, but my body would ache 24-7 from the injections (400mg/ml gear all around), so that quickly got cut in half, and then down to just a couple syringes of a test and deca mix just because I was lazy... More benching is not gonna make your bench go up. Im not some expert powerlifter or anything but I know how to increase my bench press. And IME anything makes my bench go up except benching itself.

You want to get good at benching - then benching more with variations will def help most people - by benching more I mean more frequency but with less intensity, alternate the lifts that replicate a bench - inclines, declines, board presses, benching with bands, cambered bar benches, floor presses and the like- alternate reps, rest periods, tempo etc.. your bench will grow over TIME

More benching is not gonna make your bench go up. Im not some expert powerlifter or anything but I know how to increase my bench press. And IME anything makes my bench go up except benching itself.
I powerlifted for about 2 years when in my early twenty's I bench 2x week first day high weight low rep 135x10 185x3 225x3 275x3 315x3 355x2 and back then up up up the weight x1 rep.
Second day lower weigh high rep 135x10 185x12 225x10 275x8 and down again....plus mix in incline dumbbell and decline low weight very high rep 135x25-30 over and over etc....sometimes incline smith machine with high weight. Finish with cable work pull overs....
Now letting shoulder dictate rep and weight another year I should be 100%.....I hope :-\

however, it does allow you to handle and control heavier weight when you go back to a typical "bodybuilding style" bench press with focus on the chest as the prime mover.. with elbows out to the sides and the bar touching higher near the nipple (or above it)
whole reason I started powerlifting was because of a shoulder injury which prevented me from doing ANY pressing for 7-8 months. even pressing a 10lb db felt like an ice-pick being stabbed in my shoulder, so after a couple months I started working with actual powerlifters on squat and deads while my shoulder healed, and finally bench. when I was able to bench again, the simple adjustments in technique had me pushing 30lbs heavier than I'd ever pushed before (after not pressing at all for 8months), and I've carried over that technique since 'returning' to bodybuilding and my shoulders have never been an issue since.

I've seen 250kg or so (said earlier in thread) done raw and natural by a guy in a suit who just took off the jacket. Was left speechless. Guy had a mullet too. He was from Belgium wonder if he knows Leopold.

Obviously bench pressing is way way down on the list of life skills one should aspire to obtain. But if you've already ticked those boxes then it sure is *fun*.
In other news I wrecked my pb by pause repping (2-3 second pauses) 145kg for 6 reps. I believe that puts me over 180kg for a 1 rep max but i'm not going to test it just yet.

Grandiose delusions (GD) or delusions of grandeur is principally a subtype of delusional disorder that occurs in patients suffering from a wide range of mental illnesses, including two-thirds of patients in manic state of bipolar disorder, half of those with schizophrenia and a substantial portion of those with substance abuse disorders.[1][2] GDs are characterized by fantastical beliefs that one is famous, omnipotent, wealthy, or otherwise very powerful. The delusions are generally fantastic and typically have a supernatural, science-fictional, or religious theme. There is a relative lack of research into GD, in comparison to persecutory delusions and auditory hallucinations. About 10% of healthy people experience grandiose thoughts but do not meet full criteria for a diagnosis of GD.
Prevalence[edit]
Research suggests that the severity of the delusions of grandeur is directly related to a higher self-esteem in individuals and inversely related to any individual’s severity of depression and negative self-evaluations.[3] Lucas et al. found that there is no significant gender difference in the establishment of grandiose delusion. However, there is a claim that ‘the particular component of Grandiose delusion’ may be variable across both genders.[2] Also, it had been noted that the presence of GDs in people with at least grammar or high school education was greater than lesser educated persons. Similarly, the presence of grandiose delusions in individuals who are the eldest is greater than in individuals who are the youngest of their siblings.[4]
Symptoms[edit]
According to the DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for delusional disorder, grandiose-type symptoms include grossly exaggerated belief of:
self-worth
power[5]
knowledge
identity
exceptional relationship to a divinity or famous person.[6]
For example, a patient who has fictitious beliefs about his or her power or authority may believe himself or herself to be a ruling monarch who deserves to be treated like royalty.[7] There are substantial differences in the degree of grandiosity linked with grandiose delusions in different patients. Some patients believe they are God, the Queen of England, a president's son, a famous rock star, and so on. Others are not as expansive and think they are skilled sports-persons or great inventors.[8]
Expansive delusions[edit]
Expansive delusions may be maintained by auditory hallucinations, which advise the patient that they are significant, or confabulations, when, for example, the patient gives a thorough description of their coronation or marriage to the king. Grandiose and expansive delusions may also be part of fantastic hallucinosis in which all forms of hallucinations occur.[8]
Positive functions[edit]
Grandiose delusions frequently serve a very positive function for the person of sustaining or increasing their self-esteem. As a result, it is important to consider what the consequences of removing the grandiose delusion are on self-esteem when trying to modify the grandiose delusion in therapy.[5] In many instances of grandiosity it is suitable to go for a fractional rather than a total modification, which permits those elements of the delusion that are central for self-esteem to be preserved. For example, a man who believes he is a senior secret service agent gains a great sense of self-esteem and purpose from this belief, thus until this sense of self-esteem can be provided from elsewhere, it is best not to attempt modification.[5]
Accounts of delusion[edit]

In researching over 1000 individuals of vast range of backgrounds, Stompe and colleagues (2006) found that grandiosity remains as the second most common delusion after persecutory delusions.[2] A variation in the occurrence of grandiosity delusions in schizophrenic patients across cultures has also been observed.[10][11] In research done by Appelbaum et al. it has been found that GDs appeared more commonly in patients with bipolar disorder (59%) than in patients with schizophrenia (49%), followed by presence in substance misuse disorder patients (30%) and depressed patients (21%).[2]
A relationship has been claimed between the age of onset of bipolar disorder and the occurrence of GDs. According to Carlson et al. (2000), grandiose delusions appeared in 74% of the patients who were 21 or lower at the time of the onset, while they occurred only in 40% of individuals 30 years or older at the time of the onset.[2]
Diagnosis[edit]
Patients with a wide range of mental disorders which disturb brain function experience different kinds of delusions, including grandiose delusions.[12] Grandiose delusions usually occur in patients with syndromes associated with secondary mania, such as Huntington's disease,[13] Parkinson's disease,[14] and Wilson's disease.[15] Secondary mania has also been caused by substances such as levodopa and isoniazid which modify the monoaminergic neurotransmitter function.[16] Vitamin B12 deficiency,[17] uremia,[18] hyperthyroidism[19] as well as the carcinoid syndrome[20] have been found to cause secondary mania, and thus grandiose delusions.
In diagnosing delusions, the MacArthur-Maudsley Assessment of Delusions Schedule is used to assess the patient.[21]

Delusions in schizophrenia often develop as a response to the individual attempting to explain their hallucinations.[22] Patients who experience recurrent auditory hallucinations can develop the delusion that other people are scheming against them and are dishonest when they say they do not hear the voices that the delusioned person believes that he or she hears.[22]
Specifically, grandiose delusions are frequently found predominantly in paranoid schizophrenia, in which a person has an extremely exaggerated sense of his or her significance, personality, knowledge, or authority. For example, the person may possibly declare to own IBM and kindly offer to write a hospital staff member a check for $5 million if they would only help them escape from the hospital.[23] Other common grandiose delusions in schizophrenia include religious delusions such as the belief that one is Jesus Christ.[24] A 2012 paper suggested that psychiatric conditions associated with psychotic spectrum symptoms, that may include grandiose delusions, may be possible explanations for revelatory driven experiences and activities such as those of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad and Saint Paul.[25]

If you can not bench, you are not a gym warrior, simple as that. Only exception is if you are injured or if benching cause inappropriate soreness.

QFT. in the past 48 hours I've had two girls as me how much I can bench. Not even bikini competitors, just little gym rats. It's the test of manhood and every guy should chase a big bench IMO. Im actually going to put together a 12 week training program for mine.

Just tuck the elbows, pull the bar apart, use your lats, flare on the way up, good leg drive while pinching the shoulder blades, stay tight the whole time .... bahahhahahah
That will protect your shoulders coach ..... just being a dink here coach, good advice for sure to help extend your benching life

T-Rex is correct. In 39 years of training and I mean heavy training, I've never had a shoulder problem. Problems occur from 1. Bringing the bar down to the upper part you chest causing the elbows to become parallel with the ears (wrong bar path) 2. Overuse from too much volume on a power exercise. 3. Not bringing the bar to full ROM and/or stopping the bar 1/2 way down (which is retarded in itself but people still insist it's the right way ::)).

You're experiencing that? If so, try different exercises, stretch and make sure you fully recover.

This was almost 12 years ago. Hasn't affected my strength but I do have a small asymmetry at the insertion of my left pec. It can be seen mostly when I diet down.

it's different.. you can flex (flare) your lats without spreading your scapula.
if you flex your lats, it'll create a few inches of forward movement in my elbows/upperarms.

doubt it. You've been training for strength...youve already learned to activate the muscle fibers you have. the only way you'll bench more is by gaining weight (muscle)

Tendons and ligaments can get stronger while weight does not increase, hence a higher bench and with the right combinations of stimulants and increase compounds I can see another 50lb being reached, 365 is even possible.

335 at 165 is not happening for you
I've seen guys twice smaller than me benching way more so no, I haven't learned to activate muscle fibers I have ;) It's a long process, it takes years to reach your potential.
380lbs is my dream bench, I can gain few kgs of muscles, that's no problem. It will take few years I guess. I could get there sooner with more weight increase and heavy abuse but it's kinda pointless IMO. I don't mind being called "weak for someone enhanced", I couldn't care less about opinions of guys who cannot distinguish between modest use and heavy abuse.
Being fat or unhealthy for the sake of strength is not really my thing.

My biggest concern atm is that my squat and deadlift hasn't progressed at all for a year. I'm stuck at 210kg-ish deadlift and 180kg-ish squat and had upper back injury. Really frustrating, I got really close to that on creatine and my weak upper back limits any progress. Heavy good mornings, and russian planks must help, if they don't I am not sure what to do. Adding weight to bench is easy - bench 2-3 times per week reasonably heavy, add 2.5kg every week to your heaviest day and deload every once a while. With deads I could propably abuse the shit out of myself and I still wouldn't deadlift more without fixing upper back issue.

A bodybuilders muscles are strong but his nervous system is weak. He just needs to learn to tap into that potential.

What makes a strong lift has so many variables, which means so may things can increase the lift without body weight increase. For example; a stronger joint, a stronger ligament, a stronger mind, more stimulants, for you to say someone has reached their max is such a big assumption because you are assuming his ligaments can not get stronger, his joints can not get stronger, his mind can not get stronger, hell you are even suggesting that he has the perfect combination of stimulants and compounds figured out.

USA Powerlifting alone has something like 15 in the 181's at over 500 raw. The highest being 584.

Depends on the federation also. Some federations have stricter judging than others. Over 225kg @ 82.5kg is incredibly rare in IPF. Also, IPF is a tested federation so test, var and dianabol are the only compounds you can use, var and dianabol only in off season. Pre contest test only, then prop, then HRT dose of gel and shit like that.

I agree with this. But I was simply advising deceiver. At the end to the day the three methods of strength training...the dynamic effort method, the maximal effort method, and the repetition method Westiside still admits that the repetition method (lifting a sub maximal load to failure) yields the greatest gains in maximal strength due to an increase in number of muscle size. Even more so than the maximal effort method at lifting weights 90% plus in the 1-3 rep range. You know this coach Im not telling you anything you don't know.

No need to beat this into the ground, but if you are talking equipped lifters, then yes there are many. Raw, I don't know of anyone right now. Unless you count those Paralympics competitors. However that is not really the same thing in terms of bodyweight due to obvious reasons.
