As a Buddhist, you don't have a be a peace-lovin tree hugger....LOL...you can fight if you feel threatened..you just cannot initiate said action and you should never be so angry as to do so.........in Buddhist teachings if someone is making threatening gestures toward you..you are to stay perfectly still and relax..don't egg the person on by returning his aggressiveness...give the guy a chance to back down or calm down but if the person attacks you, you are free to whip his ass if you choose to do so.
Yeah, I have done that before, broke a mans arm and then was charged and convicted and fined.  Nice Theory.  In this world, little to no aggression is tolerated by civilians.  I had three men come to my home, challenge me and I got the better of them, broke one mans arm and ended up in handcuffs at the police station.  Thats why I say buddhism sucks, that old model just doesnt fit in the new world.

But clinging to things is imperative to human survival, and I don't believe everything is changing, it is a paradox, like the old cliche, the more things change the more they stay the same.  If everything changes, then so will the fact that everything changes.  Most peoples unhappiness is caused by other people, not the things they cling too.  I just think Buddhism is too vague, like how do you not become attached to something, the only way to become unattached is to get to a point where you either don't like nor dislike anything, as we are drawn to things we like, and withdraw from things we don't.  So to develop this attitude, one needs to become passionless and just live a basic existence.  I would prefer my joys and my sufferings to some flatline existence where I pretend to be OK with things.

this is a good post and you make a good point but in Buddhism, you recognize that things change and are not permanent....yes you can like something..nothing wrong with that..but eventually you will lose most things and when you do, you have to be able to accept this and not fall apart, which then will lead you to even worse misery...you are right that unhappiness can be caused by other people but the whole idea is why are you letting other people fuck up YOUR happiness???..detach from them so that you don't get emotionally caught up in their suffering which they will gladly pass on to you!...

in our world, PEOPLE LET THEIR POSSESSIONS DEFINE WHO THEY ARE....which is why when a lot of those people lose that expensive car, the mansion with the swimming pool, the hot chick, the money, they fall apart....go into depression and many never recover..we see so many men who kill their wives or girlfriends (and sometimes their children as well) because they feel they are losing everything and have lost control...In Buddhism we realize these things aren't permanent and do not actually belong to us...we use them while we have them but when we lose them we move on to other things..they are not important in the big picture....the most important thing is our health and mental well being

Good post as well....glad to see that the teachings are helping you.....believe me it is a daily struggle but I believe that I have been helped by this tremendously....I was getting a lot of negative thoughts in my mind especially toward my ex-wife and I actually had thoughts of violence against her.....I also wanted to call her a lot of names which is dangerous because once you do that, you can't take it back....and many people in the world tend to say things which they shouldn't say.....it spreads a lot of ill will and you don't gain anything from it....it is best to have restraint.....there have been many many times when I wanted to say something bad to someone or get violent with someone due to anger....but I then practice mindfulness and remove those thoughts from my mind....well..many times once i have done this, the person I was angry with has later on come to me and done something wonderful for me....which would not have happened had I cursed that person out or hit him/her....you get back from the world what you put into the world
Sounds like a bunch of new age crap, you need to get into a serious fight with  another man, jesus, you sound like a massive fag.  If you got in a real fist fight with another man, you would learn more about yourself during that fight than you ever would in a lifetime of studying buddhism.  Man up dude, and stop talking like a fairy.  This is Getbig for fucks sake.

I think you have me confused for someone else, I am just posting in this thread, I didnt start the topic, and if you read the whole thread, I said I used to advocate Buddhism, but I haven't for a long time - I consider myself an agnostic.  I don't know why you think I support Buddhism, I think they are all nuts - Christians, Catholics, Jews, Protestans etc etc.  Religion is poison, and should be eliminated from the face of the earth.

oh by the way, one thing I left out is that Buddhism, unlike other religions DOES NOT ASK YOU TO BELIEVE IN A SAVIOR OR SEEK HELP FROM HIM...In christianity, when people are facing adversity, they pray and seek help from a higher power...Buddhism says for you to HELP YOURSELF and to be proactive in solving your own problems not to rely on a deity to help you

So are you suggesting that the only thing that is permanent, is that nothing is permanent?

I imagine they're talking about the physical world only.  Seems like you're choosing to include non-physical constructs as well, like concepts, under the umbrella of 'everything' and 'nothing,' in order to permit a sophistical equivocation on those terms.

A Buddhist would be more like a Platonist maybe, dividing the world into the illusory material world and the 'true' transcendent realm.  In pop culture, The Matrix is Plato's Cave story.  You might also enjoy debating with Heraclitus.  They say Nietzsche is his heir.

This is posted by somebody who hasn't truly suffered. I dont know what planet you are living on, but it is other people that cause our suffering, to suggest some new age crap, like - you control how you feel and if somebody else insults you it is more a reflection on them than you blah blah blah.  The truth is, other things and people hurt us, you would be fucked in a war, reacting badly to hostility and wanting to hurt back will keep you alive.  Stop reading and rehashing old information printed in a hundred new age books and get out and live life.  Come talk to me when you have had some serious shit happen.  maybe a serious accident when you are permanately injured, or the loss of ones own child etc.. And people dont define themselves by their possesions, thats all new age garbage.  People just try and get through the best they can, and thats another reason I dont agree with buddhism, you use buddhism to judge people, like being critical of other peoples life choices, so what if someone wants to own a nice car.  Fucking Communists

So what, My mum told me the same thing as I was groing up. And Ive practiced self reliance ever since. Work for myself, make tons of money, get laid whenever I want, I allow myself the freedom to love, hate, dream, create etc  I see praying as wishful thinking, practiced by immature psyche's. The belief in God is the childish longing for father, it is the property of the feeble minded, who cant think for themselves, and buddhism is just as childish.  The modern man laps up anything he reads or hears, chopping and changing his appetite like the direction of the wind.  I cant believe you all believe that garbage they publish in the mainstream, just observe the real world and you will know how to act and behave, no need to believe ancient nonsense.

no one here is acting like a fairy....I lift regularly, I lift heavy and I am a big guy for my size....I carry myself with confidence and no one EVER bothers me...and yes if someone got really aggressive and hit me there would be hell to pay, believe me...but why go through that?....if I can avoid a fight I will..returning the aggressiveness of others does not help you at all in the long run.....you punch him, he punches you..okay.,.so what???yes you might win because you hurt him more but.... you will be hurt as well....so why bother?  so you won...wow! big deal...what if the guy had a gun or knife.....he's obviously angry about his own miserable life and wants to goad some sucker into a confrontation so he can retaliate and take out his misery on someone....what do you get out of that???..you could get hurt,...killed....all to satisfy this guys anger.....believe me this happens a lot especially in confrontations over women....guys confront each other and attack each other over women....why???...better to let the guy keep your woman and move on if she's that big of a whore....you can find another....why die over a woman???...does that make sense to you???...would you be so attached to a woman that you would get yourself killed?..or kill the other guy and wind up in jail???..and if you go to jail, she would be with another guy any way!!!....change your mindset..ownership of things gets you in trouble....because then you will do anything to maintain that ownership..even if it gets you into trouble

yes..this is a good point..Buddhism asks you to look at what is really true as opposed to what is bullshit and illusion..once you are able to do this, you will see the world for what it is and avoid living in fantasy

With that attitude you would get your arse handed to you if you ever got in to a real fight, I know dudes who would chew your eyeball out if his opponent showed a moments weakness, your attitude defines uncertainty, As a man, I am ready to fight at a moments notice, I love the way it makes me feel, and win or lose, I fight hard, like a man, stand and bang, dirty boxing, ground and poiund, whatever it takes.  And afterwards if I lose I reflect and change as a man, and if I win I grow in stature, feel even more manly, and by the way, women love to be fought over, I have fucked a few chicks because I fought for them.  You may lift and look like a man, but you dont post like one.

What is really true is what people see, there is only one reality. So I am unsure of what you mean when you say that people avoid living in fantasy, it is impossible to live in a fantasy, we all only have one reality.  It sounds too me you are making a negative judgement on peoples mindset that you dont understand.  What you call living in fantasy, could merely be you projecting yourself onto others.  Because you dont understand them or there circumstances, you dumb it down and suggest they are living in a fantasy, when in reality it is more than likely it is you living in fantasy, and your ego disallows you to see this.

okay..fighting for women works for you....good for you..I have fucked many women and haven't had to fight over them....in Buddhism you have no ego therefore I have no need to feel superior or stronger than others since i have no ego to feed...you say you feel more manly when you fight and win..I won't put it down...but I have no need to fight to feel manly...I feel manly already....

men have confronted me before....just because I don't openly return his aggressiveness doesn't mean I am afraid and not a man.,....again..I stay calm...I don't run.....and I keep my eye on him so he doesn't sucker-punch me..and oftentimes the other guy has backed off when he sensed that I wasn't afraid of him....mission accomplished...

Man, you've got it all figured out!
I'm not suggesting that at all, all I'm suggesting is that Buddhism is far from the worlds answer or salvation to help restore our planet and humanity to a civilised state.  I havent figured shit out! I will attest to that anyday of the week, I live in that mental space where when people speak to me, I have to come back to earth to relate to them, dumb myself down a bit so I can get along with their half retarded mindset.  And then I go back to peeling myself back to the core, unveiling the deepest darkest reccesses of my deeply troubled mind, from there I explore all of space and time and the deepest mysteries of the cosmos.

when I say living in fantasy I mean living in denial and not seeing the reality for what it really is....some find comfort in that denial......but when the reality truly hits, they are unprepared for it...knowing the reality and not living in denial helps you to shape your own world and not become a hostage to it
