Even with a barbell?
Nope, don't like the feeling on my triceps. I've been setting up in the rack and doing barbell off the rack with my elbows starting at 90 deg. Same move imo, and a bench is more comfortable than the floor. ;D
-
Great exercise for the triceps Joe,because i train on my own it got difficult to get the d/bells in place when i got up to the 100lbers,so i placed a 5 inch thick piece of wood by my sides (next to my hips) and sat the d/bells on their ends. Then it was just a case of tilting the d/bell back and i`m in a position to start. When i`m finished and return the bells back onto the wood,i rest the d/bell on its edge and do a short tilt/pushing away movement to finish off.

Dangerous, awkward movements right there.
Epic display of over complicating things.
-
I have never tried 'em.
Must give them a chance..... next time I'm alone at gym that is ;D

haha, too bad I don't weigh 110 pounds, loser :D
Epic trying to do a movement to look like you know what you're doing when you can get the same results, if not better, from doing them on a regular bench.

Same result as what? Do you know what we use them for? I'll be waiting.

In reality, that machine COULD give the same results, but let's not be stupid.
Trainers trying to be creative and look unique in order to sell services is where this type of BS was invented.
A barbell or dumbells and an adjustable bench could mimmick your gimmick perfectly in a much safer manner.
-

Yes, actually I do know what they are used for. Chaos informed me back in the day (as he has helped me out with my chest training) and I used to do them. I don't see any difference. To each their own , I guess.
-

Hate to interrupt, but you know as well as I do that you use this crap to sell your services as unique and different.
If you sold basic, standard techniques, you would not have a business.

great steroid alternative

You're showing your extreme inexperience in strength training.
-
You're showing your extreme inexperience in strength training.
The problem with saying 1 exercise improves strength over another exercise is being able to demonstrate that the increase in strength was solely due to that 1 exercise and no other factor. That would almost be impossible to prove, UNLESS you took 2 people, had them eat the same diet, and have one of them do dumbbell floor presses and the other do machine presses (and no other exercise, since other exercises could lead to strength gains), and see who gains the most strength. Other than that, it is VERY difficult to determine what exactly lead to the strength gains. Perhaps its diet, genetics, or a combination of MANY different exercises. You would need to do a randomized clinically controlled study to state with any real certainty what lead to the strength gains.
-

He's a gimmick trolling me. Have a feeling it's reppingfor20. He hasn't been on for awhile but there has been a whole slew of new gimmicks.

We use it as an auxiliary exercise. There have been studies done on the floor press.

And I am assuming they are used to increase tricep strength. Well, I am not assuming, I know that is at least one of the reasons they are used.

I never said this doesn't work. Just said there are other methods that are less confusing to sell to your clients.
I know you have to make a buck.
BTW, if I am trolling you, stop posting videos, right?
I know better though.

Muscletecch has studies showing Cell-Tech to be 25000000% more effective than steroids.
Please post what you have though. I'm down for a good laugh.

And I am assuming they are used to increase tricep strength. Well, I am not assuming, I know that is at least one of the reasons they are used.
Just one of the reasons. The other is to help break through sticking points in the bench press (done with barbell as well). Right now we use it as an axillary lift for our Linemen and Linebackers to help create more power when engaging. These are done on our speed days, reps are low, weight is heavy and done fast and explosive.

Well, increasing tricep strength is one way of breaking through sticking points in your bench press, so those are really one and the same.

Well said, but the other methods are not as much of a 'spectacle' such as the one coach endorses.

Truly innovative! How did you ever come up with all this stuff!
-
Fails compared to a standard horizontal press, since ROM is compromised.
Fails compared to a standard horizontal press in terms of what?
-
Benching off the floor really limits the range of motion. It will allow you to use more weight because you are moving the weight a shorter distance.
I noticed some things about big benchers. Many have short arms and a big thick torso. This limits the range of motion and allows for big numbers. Inflate the chest and arch your back can take 8 plus inches off the amount of inches you have to push the bar. Simple Physics illustrates that the less a weight is moved the less work is being done.
I really liked the Hammer strength bench press for this reason. The start is the same for everyone. Suddenly big benchers couldn't bench more that some guys that couldn't even come close to beating them on the conventional bench. The reason was the advantage of a short range of motion couldn't be applied.
-
I can better isolate my pecs with the floor press rather than with the bench. I don't know if this is the goal of floor press, but it works on me, and it also preserves my (broken by the bench) shoulders.
-
Well said, but the other methods are not as much of a 'spectacle' such as the one coach endorses.
Coach is confusing the mechanisms with the end goal. The end goal is to break through a sticking point (increase bench press strength). However, coach has only identified 1 mechanism by which people break through a sticking point, and that is to increase tricep strength.
Coach, besides increasing tricep strength, how else do floor presses help someone break through a sticking point?
-
The bench is one of the most over rated exercises concerning improving athletic function. A clean and press would be better but it's to hard and takes to much effort. Most would rather lie on a bed (bench) and push a weight.
-

So I guess you'd like me to write a full article describing all of the components deemed necessary to break through sticking points of the bench press even though it's been beaten to death by every powerlifting rag in the world? Or do you not understand what the correlations might be? You think along the lines of isolation related to bodybuilding, I choose not to keep it so simple. Do you know the difference between power and strength?
-

Coach, you're evading the question. Remember, YOU'RE the supposed expert, not me. Remember, I do not know what I am talking about and I weigh 110 pounds, so why are you asking ME what the correlations are?
I ask again: how does floor presses increase overall strength (bench press)?
1. Increase tricep strength
2. ?
3. ?
4. ?
5. ?
6. ?
Surely you can fill in the above points with a few brief words. So no need to write a full, detailed article. I am sure an expert can briefly fill in the above points without writing a whole article.

Yet, coach, who is supposed to be the expert cannot answer my simple question.

Is this more your speed? haha
That with the stack and some plates added wouldn't be too horrible, no :)
I thought floor presses were generally paused in the bottom position? That's a good set regardless, Joe.
-
Yet, coach, who is supposed to be the expert cannot answer my simple question.
Think maybe I can finish watching my sons game first before I own the shit out of you? Thanks.
-
you hear alot of guys say they do db's instead of barbells on the bench for a better range of motion. but they don't have any better range of motion than these floor presses.
-
Think maybe I can finish watching my sons game first before I own the shit out of you? Thanks.
Its not an owning, you idiot. You're supposed to be the expert, not me. It would be an owning if I claimed to have every single answer as to why floor presses increase strength. I listed one answer. I never claimed to know the multitude of reasons why you claim floor presses are so good. I am simply asking you! Thus, it is not an owning, because me asking you is admitting I do not know why. Gee, you have no common sense.
I await your answer.
-
Fllor presses are not a replacement for pressing movements, if some of you stopped to think for a minute you would realize that the range of motion on the floor press is only the upper half of the movement.....what muscle groups are called into play during the upper half of a flat press? Anyone?

Along with triceps, anterior delt, some front, pec major/minors would be the primary movers. Stabilizers would include rhomboids, all four rotator cuff stabilizers, glutes (yes glutes). I'm talking just for regular bench. All auxiliarys should be to help increase the main lift. In this case bench. I'm a firm beliver in bands chains boards FLOOR PRESSING, close grip prwssong, palms in pressing, etc. In other words. I love conjugate training ie; Westside.
-
There are many methods to train. There is no right or wrong way.
All I am saying is these "spectacular" and "complicated" methods Coach, and other trainers use are pointless for the average person looking to get in shape and build muscle.
If coach did what every other successful trainer does, why would anyone "think" his services are better.
Can't just reinvent the wheel and turn around and sell it. I get that.
-

Why not just have the athlete up the dose and stick to the basics? Works wonders.
-
I always heard they were great......never tried them personally.
In my case,I could give two fucks about how much I bench these days,I only bench once in a blue moon anyway and do more incline orientated pec exercises these days along with flyes.
-

Yeah, thanks. They bench, squat, deadlift, power clean, snatch, clean and jerk.
-
Yes there is a right and wrong way you idiot.
LOL! Oh, brother.
The only wrong way to train is the method that gives no results.
So many factors in athletic performance, not just training methods.
Although, you would like us to believe otherwise.
-
Maybe. But there's a shit-ton of grey area in the middle, where it's neither "wholly bad" or "wholly good". Lots of training programs are "good enough" for 99% of people, even most pros.
Let's put it this way - 99% of guys don't train perfectly yet still manage to get great builds. That includes professional athletes.
Genetics, drugs, heart, and good effort are far more important components of the equation than any training program. Always will be.
Well said.
Amazing how many athletes feel that paying money for some trainer with "innovative" techniques will suddenly make them a champion.
-
Yes, I am sure that movement has made all the difference. ::)
Try it, you feel it in your upper pecs. I did it after I saw the vid. I don't do floor Presses, only done them once in a blue moon---just something about getting on the floor.
He uses them to improve his bench, if you go to the training board, apparently benchers tend to use this movement more in helping with their bench.
-

It may work, but depending on goals, a person may not care about strength gains on the bench.
Like I said before, this is a valid exercise, but in no way can it be considered the best or necessary.
There are millions of methods. None are best.

My guess is it impresses his clients. Got to confuse people to be a successful trainer these days, apparently.

Fails at activating as many motor neurons as possible in the muscle, versus full ROM. Full ROM lifting activates more motor neurons than shortened ROM.
So, for breaking through a sticking point, should one just use full ROM?
-
Probably should just do some more reverse lunges.

Exactly.

Benches are far overated................ ......Inclines are where it`s at, unless you have a natural propensity for benches where you can just be a psycho bencher moving big weight.........otherwise it`s an ego builder and a shoulder wrecker.
Take that Joe..
The above comments don`t apply to Joe,that SOB used to bench huge poundages unlike some of us mere mortals her like me! :(

haha, those reverse lunges must have an anti-aging effect...instead of 108, youre 103 :) :)

Double blind actually isn't that good because results are still cross-sectional and thus inherently confounded. We should really be studying these conundrums longitudinally.

I merely commented that this was a spectacular looking sales gimmick to confuse potential clients and wow current clients. Typical of trainers these days.
There are many EASIER TO UNDERSTAND methods to accomplish what coach is doing. People think harder to understand, must automatically mean genius results. Suckers.

Coach will not be happy :-\

For the average person who just wants to get in better shape I think it's more important to have some sort of program at all and stick with it, and what the program is specifically doesn't really matter that much. Like if you do 3 sets of 8 on flat bench or a pyramid scheme on the Hammer Strength, your muscles will get stronger either way.
If you're a focused athlete with specific goals and a limited amount of time to achieve them then it's likely a different story, but I don't really know much about that and so won't pretend I know more than someone who does it for a living like Coach.
-

This is why I keep referring to you as a newb, anyone with some lifting experience would know that this is not a spectacular sales gimmick, it's a commonly practiced lift for serious trainers that are looking to gain strength and push themselves to their next level. Because YOU think it's useless and confusing doesn't mean it is, it only means you are inexperienced at lifting and have no clue as to what you are looking at.

I know what coach is showing is not complicated. But to most people stupid enough to pay for a trainier, it does look complicated. My point.

Same as I do now. About 215.

nice half reps there coach.
on a serious note, why do you do these? Is this a bench assistance (lockout strength), tricep builder, upper pec builder, or what?
Have you tried out Big Dicked Bob's upright row workout yet? It's given many getbiggers fantastic results in snatching up supermodels.

Hahaha what a pathological liar - a prerequesite to bullshit people like you do on a daily basis-, more like 170 at best and everyone who has a clue about this little shitty bbing world and its rules knows it.
Life long steroid abuser and bullshiter extraordinaire. What would your natural test levels be nowadays if you had to go off the juice?
Why did you need to inject external, artificial male hormones in your body for so long? Too short to feel like a real man?
I can see someone report your death in a "RIP joeloco" thread -our very own joe loco died of a lifelong steroid addiction an "hereditary illness"- in the near future.

I can see someone report your death in a "RIP joeloco" thread -our very own joe loco died of a lifelong steroid addiction an "hereditary illness"- in the near future.
Ok. I guess you know me better than I know myself ::)

Hahaha what a pathological liar - a prerequesite to bullshit people like you do on a daily basis-, more like 170 at best and everyone who has a clue about this little shitty bbing world and its rules knows it.

I never said they were no good....please go back ans read again.
There are a million ways accomplish this. FEW are as involved and display as much of a spectacle as this method. Think about it. Two spotters and a guy on the floor for one simple movement.
Good for business I guess.
Am I clear? If not, read again.
Yeah, you're clear. Clearly a dipshit.
It's not an unusual or spectacular movement. It's a specified part of an overall training regiment. I did a 10 week routine that Coach provided (for free, mind you) and I've been lifting for a long time. I put 50+ lbs on the big three lifts, and ~100lbs on the the DL. It's not a gimmick - he knows what he's speaking about.
You're looking for something that's not there.

But the question that remains is: if he would have been provided a whole different regime by a different person, would you have received the same gains?

Clearly you have no idea on how to train properly for your goals or know how to research what methods you should be using if you need to solicit help from someone like coach.
Coach may be able to provide results. I never said he didn't know what he is talking about.
Coach didn't give you results, he provided you with direction. Almost any experienced and intelligent person could provide you with this. Many methods to get results. It's not some ridiculous riddle like you want to make it out to be.

I see your need to defend him though....don't choke on his cock.

pathetic old midget on steroids.. how much would you weigh without your daily drug abuse?
Hi "the hammer"
-
Since when is bench press overrated for MY needs. There ya go again thinking the simpleton bodybuilding lingo.
Joe,I meant MY needs not yours since you are a great bencher and I`m just medicocre.
Look at the last sentence in my post,I clearly stated my comments didn`t apply to you.
Put on your glasses my friend! ;)
-
A lot of non athletes in this thread. Floor presses and or puuting a wood block on the chest is an essential part of specifically targeting the muscles that lock out and push through the sticking point in the bench press. This is like doing rack pulls instead of deadlifts to the floor or squatting off the catch rails in the power cage when set up a little higher. This isnt about going full range of motion. It is about getting stronger in a specific part of the lift. In this case finishing of the bench press.
Back in my powerlifting days we just used a power rack for doing partials........could set the pins anywhere where more power was needed, off the chest, middle,or finishing a lock out.
-
why make things more retarded than they need to be?
lay on a bench and press properly.
how is anyone gonna lock the shoulders and get full stretch on the floor like this ::)
why not hanging on feet biceps curls or scullcrushers? ::)
To quote wes "put on your glasses old man"!!
Did you read the thread or just the first post?
-
Back in my powerlifting days we just used a power rack for doing partials........could set the pins anywhere where more power was needed, off the chest, middle,or finishing a lock out.
yeah wes, thats what we used too. i had alot of trouble lockin out on my bench and the power rack helped me alot, the power rack is a lifters best friend not only for getting stronger but for total safety
-

I said this already.......I set the pins so my elbows are at 90 and press off the pins, off the floor was very uncomfortable on my triceps.

Most athletes do not use these methods. Powerlifters, yes.

Looks like China realizes that it doesn't take some overpriced, hokus-pokus trainer like coach to be healthy and stay in shape.
Seriously, I do think most American's have no clue that it's very easy to be fit and healthy.
Doesn't cost a lot either.

Seriously, all kidding aside, let's see what you got kid.

^. This is your average gym fag again with another gimmick. If yiu think floor presses are hokus pocus youre a retard. I did these for football when i was 15 years old. I guess my coaches were trying to use hokus pocus marketing to draw us in or make us feel like we need their special tech iques. Youre a weak loser. If you even lift weights prove it. Prove youre not an average gym mturd gimmick or shut the fuck up, bitch
If it was 15 years ago your coaches had you doing these, then most likely your coaches had limited resources to refer to. I think Body by Jake was big back then too.
Am I clear? If not, please read again.

Dejavu?
I never said they were, but to the average kid or inexperienced client, athlete, etc., they are.
My point from the beginning.
I'll make it simple.
Would infomericals be able to sell a product if they weren't displayed as spectacular or different than anything already on the market?
All while the seller knows there are many similar products on the market that work. Seller just needs to make his look better, spectacular if you will.
Some call it selling. Some call it trickery.
-
Lmao @calling floor presses "spectacular and complicated". ;D
Only the most coordinated of athletes should venture into this world of floor exercises. Very complicated indeed

So your issue isn't with floor presses, per se, but with Coach, whom you seem to loathe for selling his personal training business.
It's reppingfor20. His knowledge of training is as clear as his knowledge of politics.

Fails at activating as many motor neurons as possible in the muscle, versus full ROM. Full ROM lifting activates more motor neurons than shortened ROM.
The point of lifting is to activate motor neurons, and recruit fibers. Recruiting as many fibers (all or nothing principle) as possible provides greatest stimulus across the muscle, providing greatest potential for hypertrophy. It's also superior for strength athletes who depend on the ability to maximally recruit all motor neurons on a 1RM lift to ensure success on a lift.
Sometimes you want specific motor neurons activated (working around injury, addressing weakness, other...), and that's where ROM-compromised lifts serve a purpose (like floor presses). But most of the time, you probably don't want a shortened ROM.
Too much time spent lifting in a shortened ROM can actually also potentiate injury. A less flexible muscle has a naturally shortened everyday ROM, and is more prone to tears. You can get around this with more flexibility training (i.e. stretching, yoga, deep tissue massage (no t-bombz), and active release and foam rolling). And with pre-workout activation work.
sorry, not correct. the neurons are recruited in response to the effort required- which is partly learning the movement and the rest in total effort (intensity).
full ROM has nothing to do with recruitment. The only reason why additional neurological activity would occur would be due to more muscle groups being involved...other than the focus, or target group. For the target group, the ROM and motor activity are not related (at least for half to 2/3 reps (im pre empting those clowns who try to argue about 1/10th reps )).
-
So your issue isn't with floor presses, per se, but with Coach, whom you seem to loathe for selling his personal training business.
I have nothing against Coach personally. I just previously stated at some point, days ago, that the methods in his videos are presented in an overly complicated way to make his services "seem" unique, when in reality, they are nothing unique.
I don't blame him for trying to make a living.
-
It's reppingfor20. His knowledge of training is as clear as his knowledge of politics.
Is it not possible for anyone to see the gimmicktry in your videos?
Please understand.

i was planning to do them off the edge of bench while lying on the floor....
never done that and never will... dont need to
-
Alright Disco, you got me stumped here. You're a smart guy who's opinion I respect, so let's talk.
Motor unit recruitment enjoys a causative relationship with intensity. The more intense the activity, the greater the MUR, the greater the force generated by the fibers ascribed to the MU. Recent meta-analysis of the research has shown that intensity, and not necessarily load, are primary directors of MRU. Research has shown that a muscle will recruit the same MU's whether the load lifted is a set of 2 reps with a 2RM, or a set of 12 reps with a 12RM.
We know that a full ROM exercise is more intense (i.e. requires more effort) to move the same load vs a shortened ROM exercise. In other words, it's common knowledge we can do lock outs easier than full ROM bench presses, if resistance is same. Makes sense.
So, if full ROM exercises are more intense than shortened ROM exercises, wouldn't they recruit more MU across a muscle body than a shortened ROM?
I'm not telling here...I'm asking you. I've tried to find research on MU recruitment with shortened vs full ROM exercises, and haven't really found any. I'm not a neurobiologist, so I probably haven't looked in the right places.
I guess what I'm asking here is, set me straight if I'm wrong with some proof. I'd rather know the truth than argue a stupid position on the internet (if in fact my position is stupid).
Thanks man,
Talk about making working out complicated.... ::) :-\ :P
-
Easy big guy.
My workouts are as boiled down as anyone else's.
I just like doing the research for fun. Wasn't asking you anyways. Probably should have sent this in a PM then.
Relax tiger, no reason to get all uppity about not understanding partial ROM vs full ROM.

6" deep? Too tall, try 2 or 4". I think floor presses or rack lockouts are harder because you start from the bottom of each rep with dead weight. Makes a huge difference.

??? If the bar touches your chest on a normal bench a 2 or 4" board press should be no problem regardless of arm length.

It has been mentioned several times that Coach may use hormones. Since he is a S&C coach and participant, I am curious.
Since he puts a lot of his training techniques out there for show, I think it's a fair question to ask. Is it not?

It has been mentioned several times that Coach may use hormones. Since he is a S&C coach and participant, I am curious.
Since he puts a lot of his training techniques out there for show, I think it's a fair question to ask. Is it not?
Asking a small business owner who puts himself out there on a public board about if he's using gear or not doesn't seem to be any of your business. He has exposed who he is on the Internet, you haven't. We don't know your name or where you work.
You seem to just enjoy stirring the pot, for the sake of just stirring the pot. Just my .02.....

It's naive of you to even think one thing has to do with another. Why not come down and train....or does that scare you? You're obviously just one my troll haters who refuses to make yourself known. Although I'm narrowing the possiblity of who it might be, and they both seem to be cowards. But remember. If my business is slandered in anyway in my community I know where to look first and I pretty much have endless resourses to track you.

Tell me Chiro, if you are calling me out for stirring the pot, why did you follow me over to this thread?
Only an idiot would put his name out on here, especially getbig of all places. Why would anyone do that....oh wait, maybe they need "real" internet friends.
Your have mistaken bravery for stupidity, bud.

Coach, a simple "no" would have worked, but I get it. Very clear.
Now, please stop with the "meet me here touhguy" challenges.
Settle down and stop being so paranoid. Just because we don't agree with each other, doesn't mean I'm going to slander or attack your business. I have said it from the beginning, good for you making a living.
Trust me, nobody cares enough. But, you really should be careful of what you put on the web. It WOULD be entirely too easy to bring your business down by what you do on the internet using your real name. The internet is what it is. This is not the real world.

I didn't follow you my friend... Just saw a ridiculous post that seemed out of line. Just happened to be you! :)

Was waiting for coach to answer this one :(
