DALLAS (WABC) --
The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed the first case of the Ebola virus diagnosed in the United States.
The patient is reportedly in isolation and being monitored at a Dallas hospital after traveling to West Africa.
The hospital says its staff is following recommendations from the CDC and the Texas Department of Health to keep doctors and nurses safe.
Medical officials had announced a day earlier that the patient's symptoms and recent travel indicated a case of Ebola, the virus that has killed more than 3,000 people across West Africa and infected a handful of Americans who have traveled to that region.
The CDC has said 12 other people in the U.S. have been tested for Ebola since July 27. Those tests came back negative.
The National Institutes of Health recently admitted an American doctor exposed to the virus while volunteering in Sierra Leone. Four other patients have been treated at hospitals in Georgia and Nebraska.
According to the CDC, Ebola symptoms can include fever, muscle pain, vomiting and bleeding, and can appear as long as 21 days after exposure to the virus.
Authorities are holding a news conference to release more information.

people forget that ebola doesn't exactly have a long contagious period. you have to get DIRECT contact with the body fluids from someone who is showing SIGNS of it. you could have mixed up a beaker of this dude's blood and chugged it with a chaser of piss before he exhibited symptoms and nothing would happen to you. Everyone could ride a bus with someone infected with ebola and no one would catch anything unless they started coughing blood on everyone individually.
it keeps spreading in Africa because of shit quarantine procedures and people who don't know the dangers of the disease not getting treatment. that's why all those doctors kept getting it, they were treating patients without taking proper precautions.

I keep hearing about how there is nothing to worry about and how ut burns to quicnly and will simply burn itself out, but yet it meeps spreading and appearing it differwnt countries. Also heard that the dallas guy was walking around for 7 days and got denied admission to several hospitals.

The biggest thing that I find sadly hilarious is that a Liberian national was just simply allowed to waltz right in. You would think that with Liberia being more or less the epicenter of most Ebola outbreaks now that they'ed atleast have customs take some special precautions, but nope. God forbid we actually quarantine or medical monitor these folks, that wouldn't be polite ::) :-\.

Listened to the CDC and Texas doctor's press conference last night and one of the doctors said something about taking the correct precautions and "the air that we all breathe"....it was as much a figure of speech as anything I think - but then one of the other doctors corrected him and insisted this wasn't airborne. Highly unusual for a doctor to correct another like that...really stuck out. I would be shitting bricks if I had any chance of sharing geography with this case.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warning hospitals and doctors that “now is the time to prepare,” has issued a six-page Ebola “checklist” to help healthcare workers quickly determine if patients are infected, the Washington Examiner reports.

This thing has already mutated into different strains by location in Africa. The more new hosts that it sees the better the chance that it becomes biologically more diverse. Ebola with a longer life outside of a host or taking longer to kill a host in order to spread longer are not as dangerous as a true airborne strain; but just those type of mutations would make it deadly in the USA. This idea that only Africa can get this because they have poor health conditions and sanitation is true NOW but maybe not in the future.

Those looking for good news on the fight against Ebola will not find much encouragement from Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly, the commander of the U.S. Southern Command. As Jim Garamone of Department of Defense News reports, Kelly told an audience at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday that, if the disease reaches Central America, "it’s literally, ‘Katie bar the door,’ and there will be mass migration into the United States." He also said with certainty that "there is no way we can keep Ebola [contained] in West Africa."
“By the end of the year, there’s supposed to be 1.4 million people infected with Ebola and 62 percent of them dying, according to the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention]..."
“So, much like West Africa, it will rage for a period of time,” Kelly said.
This is particularly possible scenario if the disease gets to Haiti or Central America, he said. If the disease gets to countries like Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador, it will cause a panic and people will flee the region, the general said.
“If it breaks out, it’s literally, ‘Katie bar the door,’ and there will be mass migration into the United States,” Kelly said. “They will run away from Ebola, or if they suspect they are infected, they will try to get to the United States for treatment.”
Kelly said that human trafficking could be an additional wrinkle in the battle to contain the disease. He related a disturbing anecdote from a recent visit to Central America where some men from Liberia were headed to the United States:
Also, transnational criminal networks smuggle people and those people can be carrying Ebola, the general said. Kelly spoke of visiting the border of Costa Rica and Nicaragua with U.S. embassy personnel. At that time, a group of men “were waiting in line to pass into Nicaragua and then on their way north,” he recalled.
“The embassy person walked over and asked who they were and they told him they were from Liberia and they had been on the road about a week,” Kelly continued. “They met up with the network in Trinidad and now they were on their way to the United States -- illegally, of course.”
Those men, he said, “could have made it to New York City and still be within the incubation period for Ebola.”
Earlier this year, General Kelly gave some chilling testimony about the limitations on the United States's ability to protect the southern border:
In spring hearings before the Senate and House Armed Services Committees, Kelly said that budgets cuts are “severely degrading” the military’s ability to defend southern approaches to the U.S border. Last year, he said, his task force was unable to act on nearly 75 percent of illicit trafficking events. “I simply sit and watch it go by,” he said. But the potential threats are even greater. Kelly warned that neglect has created vulnerabilities that can be exploited by terrorist groups, describing a “crime-terror convergence” already seen in Lebanese Hezbollah’s involvement in the region.

My guess is that a large subset of the population has worn politically-colored glasses for so long that they are incapable of seeing the world without them. Working in the commercial airline mfg indusry, i think banning air travel from those countries will actually STRENGTHEN the airline industry as it will boost traveler confidence that theyre not on a plane full of fucking ebola infected Africans.

Ban commercial flights. He needs to be committed to keeping the disease quarantined or don't. By his own standards, sending three thousand American troops to keep the diseases contained is a pointless exercise. It's a fucking show and insulting to the American people. And that kind of dishonesty should alarm people. He should send as many medical experts as is appropriate. Take volunteers, whatever. That way, people might not be as likely to flee the country.
