have got to agree with point number 2.
its simple energy conservation.
couple that with how your body responds to overload.
imagine if you have 100 total units of energy to spend when you go into the gym.
everything you do takes units from that energy level. AND, as the energy reduces, the capacity to be intense also reduces.
i.e. , at 100 energy, you can do 100 intensity.
so effectively its a double whammy.
spending time beyond a warmup, working up to a high weight is a tax on both reserves. it effectively reduces what you could do.
in addition its a waste of work done and power- both critical to growth. doing sub maximal exercise using depleting resources trains your body to be sub maximal.
its pretty simple really.
you also dont grow unless you are experiencing extreme stress. what you think is intense, really isnt.
pyramiding down is more effective than up, but trains your body to optimise itself to that kind of work.
if you want size, warm up, conserve your energy, maybe do a sighter for a few reps, then nail a set for 6-8 reps. rest for quite some time, then do another.
that way you train your body to respond to intense single bursts of output..i.e. hypertrophy.
power = work done divided by time
work done = distance a weight is moved
muscle mass is built by maintaining a high power value and high enough work done to allow full recuperation between sessions.

even when i was 15 years old i was not convinced by pyramiding sets and never ever did them.. i always warm up by doing some stretches then 1 light set then one moderate set before the first exercise only then do my heaviest set and start any other exercise with my heaviest weigh with no more warming up..
my great friends panda and mr. no body both convinced me to decrease the number of sets i was doing as i was overtraining my body.. seriously and not because i like him panda is really very knowledgeable and knows how to train and diet..

Clean most of the time PLUS he can still use his stupid principles - eat "junk" while watching his cals, then return to clean eating.
for example when hes sick of eating egwhites and oats he could replace those cals with a kitkat, then continue his diet.
His entirely "candy" diet is a disaster.

He's not putting in any effort to build and retain a bit of muscle anywhere .... I don't get it ... not even concentrating on using movements to lose the fat around his middle so he doesn't look so mishapen .. cut down your mid section and build up your limbs is what I'd like to see .. but he's focused on the scale readout and as long as he can justify his poor behaviour with the numbers going down he wants others to think he's doing right :-[

I agree avec disco here, get in a proper warm-up, and then hit a heavy work set or two. And w8m8, there is no such thing as spot reduction.

So basically rather than posting your studies (which is all he asked), youre turning it around and instead telling him to prove you wrong (which he shouldnt have to, as youre the one telling all of us about these studies.)
BUT, you are not giving him any room to work, as you will accept nothing less than the same controlled scientific studies that (since you know they agree with you) Youre basically telling him, prove me wrong BUT YOU CAN ONLY USE THE SOURCES I GIVE YOU (which just happens to agree with me)., which is stupid, as Science has yet to create a single person that even looks like a bodybuilder.
And dont give us that "steroid user" crap, as you have admitted to using and are the complete tard that says that GH does NOTHING for muscle mass. Even if if doesnt directly add muscle mass, it does something, seeing as how the physiques of the 90's (when GH became readily used) skyrocketed in weight. So again, real world results fly in the face of your case studies.
My thing is, when Im trying to learn how to do something, (I.E. Bodybuilding) I go out and find the biggest guy I can, find out what hes doing, and follow that to a T, because I know that it works. Trying to reinvent the wheel is the dumbest thing you can possibly do.
Your case studies have yet to provide any OUTSTANDING resulsts (Wavelength and Adonis I dont consider outstanding, Wavelength has an exceptional fast metabolism, and Adonis you never know if hes telling the truth or not).

Yeah, ab and core work will tone and strength the ab and core area, but it won't remove fat from those areas any better than any other exercise would do. As far as fat loss is concerned, "caloric expense" of the exercise is all that matters.

I kind of agree with Panda here, ive always been of the opinion that there is no such thing as spot reduction, the body removes fat in a certain order and you cant do anything to change that, and doing abdominal work will make the abs grow in musculature, and when you diet the fat off, boom thicker muscle=bigger midsection.
I only think that happens with Steroid users though, Im pretty sure that a natural cannot add enough muscle to the midsection to fuck it up.
But no, I dont believe spot fat reduction works at all. The body chooses where its going to lose fat from, and you cant persuade it by working one muscle group more than another, or every fat ass training there abs 24/7 would have ripped stomachs.

I am not being antagonistic and truly do wonder why you are not building muscle anywhere ... your photos show a loss of fat .. but no shape is appearing anyplace and it's been months .. are you concentrating on just losing pounds and not defining anything until you reach a certain point ?

Yes they do che ma man, but they don't remove fat selectively, meaning that you lose fat from all over your body, and not just one area. I'm not sure if you check my "Me at my peak" photo when I was a legit sub-6, but I NEVER EVER DID 1 FUCKING CRUNCH, SIT-UP, OR LEG RAISE, to achieve that ab condition. Yeah man, I know my abs ain't outstanding, but the point is that spot reduction is a complete and utter myth.

yeah when the skin is stretched it only has so much elasticity, I have read that the older you are the less it has, so if Panda is in his 30's hes really fucked, the skin probably wont have any elasticity left, so when he loses that weight its going to fold and hang like those people that do gastric bypass, hopefully he has enough money to afford some plastic surgery.

You are spot on Shockwave, ab training will strengthen and thicken the ab wall, if progressive overload training is applied to this ab training, then when you get real lean (sub-8) your abs will definately "pop out" and show much better.

Im not stupid enough to think that just because hes fat means he cant have done a lot of research on nutrition, sometimes having something like his fattness can be a motivational factor to learn as much as you can,
That being said,
Its plainly obvious for anyone to see, the only reason he goes with his theoriy is because it alows him to eath like a fat obese man.
Generally when I was fat, I read up on how the most shredded guys around got shredded, and I did what they did, and while I have yet to get shredded, I DID lose 100lbs and turn my whole body bomposition around big time.
IMHO, all the studies in the world dont make up for real world results.

the gimmick is that a calorie is a calorie "as long as you take enough macronutrients". Since is it impossible to get "enough macronutrients" if you only eat french fries and ice cream all day, you will have to start puting quality calories into the mix up to a level that your diet will look pretty traditional, and guess what: this is where this useless tautology ends.

I'm following wavelength's diet plan and it's been going good so far. Actually, I've been losing too much weight. While I would never try dieting on candy, the "calorie is a calorie" concept has helped me be less fearful of stuff like fruit smoothies (to get micronutrients) with lots of sugar, fast food burgers for protein if I'm visiting a friend, eating white carbs if there is no whole wheat available, drinking lots of liquid calories (again usually if I'm visiting friends), etc.
I don't get why people are so up in arms about this stuff. If you are eating enough protein and few enough calories while dieting, and don't end up feeling like shit (which admittedly anyone would eating all junk) so that you can't complete your workouts or feel satisfied with your health, what's the problem?

My thing is, when Im trying to learn how to do something, (I.E. Bodybuilding) I go out and find the biggest #### I can, find out what hes doing, and follow that to a T, because I know that it works. Trying to reinvent the wheel is the dumbest thing you can possibly do.
Your case studies have yet to provide any OUTSTANDING resulsts (Wavelength and Adonis I dont consider outstanding, Wavelength has an exceptional fast metabolism, and Adonis you never know if hes telling the truth or not).

my pics might not show drastic improvements, but i'm seeing them.
p.s. hope you enjoyed the holidays and had a nice time with your loved ones. seriously every post you make here is full of bitterness and hate. you need to start enjoying life more. perhaps you will lighten up here.

It really depends on what your goals are... If you were eating 4,000 calories per day, and then you cut those calories in half and ate 2,000 calories worth of pure shit, you'd still lose weight... but the fact is- amino acids build proteins, proteins build muscle... eat a diet with barely any protein and you'll have barely any muscle.

you can ignore these studies and pretend these hundreds of people are some sort of genetic marvels, or you can simply refuse to accept the studies because you dieted a certain way and are unable to accept there is a easier way but it does not change the facts - a calorie is a calorie.

The Effect of Supplemental Isolated Weight-Training Exercises on Upper-Arm Size and Upper-Body Strength

The aim of this study was to examine the hypothesized additional training effect of programming isolated supplemental exercises in
conjunction with compound weight-training exercises on muscle size and strength. Seventeen national-level baseball players volunteered to partite in this 10-week training study and were randomly divided into 2 groups. The control group completed a 10-week training program consisting of the bench press, lat pull-down, dumbbell incline press and dumbbell 1-arm row exercises. The treatment group completed the same training program but with the addition of biceps curl and triceps extension exercises. A tape measure was used to record upper-arm cirferences, and a 5 repetition maximum (5RM) was determined on the bench press and lat pull-down for each subject before and after training.
Both the treatment and control groups displayed significant increases in upper-arm cirference (6.6 and 6.5%, respectively), 5RM bench press (21.4 and 22.1%, respectively) and 5RM lat pull-down (15.7 and 14.5%, respectively). There were no significant differences between the groups in the percentage change before and after training. The findings of this study suggest that isolation exercises are not necessary in order to increase compound movement strength or increase upper-arm girth. These findings also suggest that strength coaches can save time by not including isolation exercises and still achieve increases in strength and size.

I'm curious what were their set and rep protocols? Also, did they use a split routine or train everything all together? And lastly, how often did they train their bodyparts? Once a week, twice a week, three times a week?

The aim of this study was to examine the hypothesized additional training effect of programming isolated supplemental exercises in
conjunction with compound weight-training exercises on muscle size and strength. Seventeen national-level baseball players volunteered to partite in this 10-week training study and were randomly divided into 2 groups. The control group completed a 10-week training program consisting of the bench press, lat pull-down, dumbbell incline press and dumbbell 1-arm row exercises. The treatment group completed the same training program but with the addition of biceps curl and triceps extension exercises. A tape measure was used to record upper-arm cirferences, and a 5 repetition maximum (5RM) was determined on the bench press and lat pull-down for each subject before and after training.
Both the treatment and control groups displayed significant increases in upper-arm cirference (6.6 and 6.5%, respectively), 5RM bench press (21.4 and 22.1%, respectively) and 5RM lat pull-down (15.7 and 14.5%, respectively). There were no significant differences between the groups in the percentage change before and after training. The findings of this study suggest that isolation exercises are not necessary in order to increase compound movement strength or increase upper-arm girth. These findings also suggest that strength coaches can save time by not including isolation exercises and still achieve increases in strength and size.

Well, it is very obvious and true that COMPOUND EXERCISES ARE KING, and I even think that the tris can get by just fine with dips and close-grip bench presses, BUT... I don't think that the bis get as much quality stimulation from "pull" exercises ie. all forms of rows and pulldowns. But maybe I am just saying this coz my biceps pretty much suck, and they are BY FAR my worst upper body part lol

I didn't achieve contest condition. But what matters is a caloric deficit, with cardio or without, doesn't matter.

I actually believe what he says regarding natural limits. My best rather lean condition was 167 @ 8% and yes, there is a HUGE difference btw 8% and 5%. It's a MUCH BIGGER difference than from even 15% to 10%

And that covers the 3 major actions of the biceps: supination, elbow flexion, and shoulder flexion ;D So, the biceps do indeed contract when one perform a row or a pulldown, but usually only one of the biceps actions are called into play during those movements (elbow flexion)

sorry dj - you are correct.
i was focussed on the posterior and anterior delts actions rather than the shoulder movement as a whole.
despite what jones said - i still say the pull up works the bicep as a whole, as you cannot specifically tell the body to only contract certain parts i.e. bicep or brachialis.

The study that he posted basically said that compound ex. build the arms well enough, and that isolation ex. aren't needed for the arms. I believe that it's true with regards to triceps (ie. dips and close-grip bench presses) but I don't buy it in regards to biceps. Being a former bench press specialist, maybe I'm just spoiled in regards to triceps, since all of us so-called "bench press guys" have pretty decent triceps on us, without and tricep "isolation" work ::) ::) ::) P.S.
