Bingo! Tons of guys are BIG... that's easy to do, just lift & eat everything in sight. I think that's why everyone rags on Arvilla for posting his pic up everywhere... he's nothing special. There are dozens of guys like him in every gym in the country.
The real trick is being big with very low bodyfat.

I read about every bodybuilding magazine there was out, from cover to cover, between the ages of 15 and 20. I've been a veteran poster on these boards for the past 5 years...about as long as there have been boards. Before I made a name for myself in the industry strictly by posting on these things, I was an ardent reader of misc.fitness.weights in it's heyday. And yes, I've lived alongside pros and basically lived the most hardcore "bodybuilding lifestyle" imaginable for the past three years, even if some of it hasn't even involved the actual pursuit of bodybuilding, for the past 3 years in Venice, CA, where I still reside 5 miles from Gold's Venice today. Ha ha...I had my fucking ACE personal training accreditation when I was 19 and worked as a personal trainer in gyms for 3 years before becoming an actual physical therapist 5 years ago. Been practicing professionally in that arena ever since. I've coached 2 people through contest preps before, and got them in shapes they never imagined possible, not to mention, I took the woman I married in the year 2000 (we're now divorced) from basically bodybuilding untrained, to 6th in her first heavyweight Nationals appearance in 2002. I don't really like doing people's preps anymore, but holy shit, you need this BAD. Not to mention, it'll be fun doing it here in front of God and everybody. ;D

I squatted 185 for 3 massive sets of 6 my first leg day back in the gym about 4 days ago. ;D I've been known to squat 455 for 6 quality, parallel reps before my knees got really bad, though. That was when I was around 23-24 I think. I'm 6'1", so that's a pretty tough feat. Go ahead and say that 455 for 6 is beginner-level bodybuilding...just like you were trying to laugh at guys the other day who do 120 pound dumbbell shoulder presses for reps, as though that's child's play. NOBODY, that's not either a complete fat ass, ALL upper body, or has the head of a bastard cat, can press the 120's for 6-8 that won't produce pictures for people to see on a fucking bodybuilding board. Sarcasm, either you're fucking lying about your lifts, or you're a fucking retarded looking mother fucker. Either way, your only significance here comes from your post count alone. You're known exclusively for 2 things here: your negativity, and your constant perseveration on calling people homo and speaking of homoerotic tendencies in graphic detail.

I told Bob Chick at the gym last night that I was looking for a TEAM TITUS T-shirt. He told me he used to have one, that he'd bought as a joke, but wasn't sure he still had it. If I can't find one to buy from somebody I wanna make my own, or at least talk 240 into selling them again off his freecraigtitus.com site. Craig had them for sale on his site, but I doubt there'd be anyone sitting by that computer to fill the orders anymore.

No, the tops of my thighs parallel to the ground reps. When you stand 6'1", why don't you see how far you have to drop to get the tops of your thighs actually parallel with the ground. I'm nearly folded up in the bottom position, and if anything, people tell me I shouldn't go so DEEP.

I see his passion for this shit, and I know ANYONE'S capable of getting into decent shape if they have enough interest in this sport. I actually think he puts himself out here so much simply out of hopes that someone will challenge him enough to give him the drive he needs to overcome his fears. I relate to that. Look at ME posting here. I'm capable of more and I'm looking for peer pressure, too.

hmm..i dont know Mcfarland, I betcha he wont last for more than a month- You know how hard it is to diet, I do- I used to almost cry myself to bed the last week before ths contest, that was the most brutal time...
I never won a show, but im proud to say ive placed in the top 5 in 3 out of the 4 shows I cimpeted in the NGA.
Anyhow, just talking from experience-
Its EASY to cruise around at mediocre shape, train, etc- but most people wouldnt endure a bodybuilders contest/fasting diet for 3 months. (how long it takes me to getmy abs and get really lean)...
I hope he does it, with your resources all he needs is the mental toughness to not eat cakes and crap food...id say from how he looks, hell have to stop eating red meats too- id put that boy on a fish diet mainly...

You have no idea what Michael does in the gym, and what he eats. He eats better/cleaner than anyone I know. He doesn't eat any sugary items like donuts (who ever wrote that), no deserts, no sweets. Rarely eats potatoes and pasta. Never eats breads. His diets is literally lean chicken, more lean chicken, some filet mignon, steamed veggies and small amounts of rice, rice cakes, all natural peanut butter, egg whites, sometimes nuts. I KNOW all this because I am the one cooking it. And believe me, I am sick to death of such a bland diet, so don't go saying he eats like a pig. He doesn't. Personally, I think he needs more cardio than he does. He also busts his ass in the gym. He is there everyday and spends close to 2 - 2 1/2 hours there. Again I KNOW this because I am there. He is quite serious about getting leaner and losing the bodyfat. Where would have placed in the last contest you did?? He'd probably say dead last lol.

If I saw arvilla at the gym, I would think hes "big" but in terms of height, and overall..FOOTBALL player stats- Hes no where NEAR "BIG" in bodybuilder terms...no way, nohow...NOT as a BODYBUILDER.

I've done THREE shows, and won the novice overall in my first one at age 22. I've been a virtual SPONGE for bodybuilding info for the past 15 years of my life. I read about every bodybuilding magazine there was out, from cover to cover, between the ages of 15 and 20. I've been a veteran poster on these boards for the past 5 years...about as long as there have been boards. Before I made a name for myself in the industry strictly by posting on these things, I was an ardent reader of misc.fitness.weights in it's heyday. And yes, I've lived alongside pros and basically lived the most hardcore "bodybuilding lifestyle" imaginable for the past three years, even if some of it hasn't even involved the actual pursuit of bodybuilding, for the past 3 years in Venice, CA, where I still reside 5 miles from Gold's Venice today. Ha ha...I had my fucking ACE personal training accreditation when I was 19 and worked as a personal trainer in gyms for 3 years before becoming an actual physical therapist 5 years ago. Been practicing professionally in that arena ever since. I've coached 2 people through contest preps before, and got them in shapes they never imagined possible, not to mention, I took the woman I married in the year 2000 (we're now divorced) from basically bodybuilding untrained, to 6th in her first heavyweight Nationals appearance in 2002. I don't really like doing people's preps anymore, but holy shit, you need this BAD. Not to mention, it'll be fun doing it here in front of God and everybody. ;D

I squatted 185 for 3 massive sets of 6 my first leg day back in the gym about 4 days ago. ;D I've been known to squat 455 for 6 quality, parallel reps before my knees got really bad, though. That was when I was around 23-24 I think. I'm 6'1", so that's a pretty tough feat. Go ahead and say that 455 for 6 is beginner-level bodybuilding...just like you were trying to laugh at guys the other day who do 120 pound dumbbell shoulder presses for reps, as though that's child's play. NOBODY, that's not either a complete fat ass, ALL upper body, or has the head of a bastard cat, can press the 120's for 6-8 that won't produce pictures for people to see on a fucking bodybuilding board. Sarcasm, either you're fucking lying about your lifts, or you're a fucking retarded looking mother fucker. Either way, your only significance here comes from your post count alone. You're known exclusively for 2 things here: your negativity, and your constant perseveration on calling people homo and speaking of homoerotic tendencies in graphic detail.

IT DOESN'T MATTER, if you can squat parallel or all the way down with no weight, you should be able to squat that far down with weight..........PERIOD!!!

You have no idea what Michael does in the gym, and what he eats. He eats better/cleaner than anyone I know. He doesn't eat any sugary items like donuts (who ever wrote that), no deserts, no sweets. Rarely eats potatoes and pasta. Never eats breads. His diets is literally lean chicken, more lean chicken, some filet mignon, steamed veggies and small amounts of rice, rice cakes, all natural peanut butter, egg whites, sometimes nuts. I KNOW all this because I am the one cooking it. And believe me, I am sick to death of such a bland diet, so don't go saying he eats like a pig. He doesn't. Personally, I think he needs more cardio than he does. He also busts his ass in the gym. He is there everyday and spends close to 2 - 2 1/2 hours there. Again I KNOW this because I am there. He is quite serious about getting leaner and losing the bodyfat. Where would have placed in the last contest you did?? He'd probably say dead last lol.

Yep cardio pushes the time spent at the gym to annoying levels..My training would go for about 1hr, maybe 1 1/2 on leg day, then 30min for cardio...aaarghhh....
I wouldnt say if Mike did legs he would have a complete physique, his back, and shoulders, and chest.. need help big time.

Rice cakes has got to be one of the fastest carbs around. I thought only women in aerobic classes were hooked on those. It's great for post workout meal. Little else IMO.
White rice is fast too. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who was on a diet. Perhaps for post-workout carb up? Why eat white rice when there is brown rice available? Parboiled rice is pretty good as well.
As far as your concern about pasta... there is whole-grain pasta available, it gets digested slowly. Nutritious and very good for people who like to stay full and stick to a diet.
Stick with eating healthy, include fibrous carbs througout the day, plenty of veggies, and have a caloric deficit of 500 calories, Arvilla will be cut for the summer. In six months, Arvilla would lose 22 lbs of fat.
Of course, the diet could be stricter, but with a 500 calories restriction per day, Arvilla won't have to suffer. JMO.

I guess I don't just see *where* improvements can be made. Yes, cardio. Yes, better carbs. But damn, dropping 30+ pounds with cardio when you're already working out 150 minutes a day... this should be interesting!

Thats true. You can see by Mike's posts that he is happy and content with himself. He doesn't take himself too seriously and he is full of enthusiasm. Laura, you are obviously happy with him too. Those are things that you can't buy. Some people wouldn't understand that. Some here do.

As far as your concern about pasta... there is whole-grain pasta available, it gets digested slowly. Nutritious and very good for people who like to stay full and stick to a diet.
Stick with eating healthy, include fibrous carbs througout the day, plenty of veggies, and have a caloric deficit of 500 calories, Arvilla will be cut for the summer. In six months, Arvilla would lose 22 lbs of fat.
Of course, the diet could be stricter, but with a 500 calories restriction per day, Arvilla won't have to suffer. JMO.

Theres a lot of fancy ways to go about fat loss. The difference in glycemic index of white vs. brown rice is very small. But you should focus on eating unprocessed foods anyways.
Bottom line is you have to burn more calories than you take in. If I were you I'd start taking 12x bodyweight in pounds. Time to start monitoring calories chubbs.

that's 2000-2800 calories a day just from carbs. (carb = 4, pro = 4, fat = 9 kcal per gram)
Assuming a 40pro/40carb/20fat split, that's 5000-7000 calories a day total. Even higher if he goes for a higher protein ratio.
Seems kinda high, even for a guy that weighs 270.

You have no idea what Michael does in the gym, and what he eats. He eats better/cleaner than anyone I know. He doesn't eat any sugary items like donuts (who ever wrote that), no deserts, no sweets. Rarely eats potatoes and pasta. Never eats breads. His diets is literally lean chicken, more lean chicken, some filet mignon, steamed veggies and small amounts of rice, rice cakes, all natural peanut butter, egg whites, sometimes nuts. I KNOW all this because I am the one cooking it. And believe me, I am sick to death of such a bland diet, so don't go saying he eats like a pig. He doesn't. Personally, I think he needs more cardio than he does. He also busts his ass in the gym. He is there everyday and spends close to 2 - 2 1/2 hours there. Again I KNOW this because I am there. He is quite serious about getting leaner and losing the bodyfat. Where would have placed in the last contest you did?? He'd probably say dead last lol.

Mike, Don't you have affiliations with John Defends, a freak in his own right? But for Jeff to make those qualifications and actually justify them as legitimate experience, doest that make you wonder?? I'm sure Jeff's a good and well meaning person, but those qualifications leave much to be desired!!
Jeffrey has been in and around the game for years, only recently had he started to think about competing albeit for a handful of shows, but he obviously knows enough for pre-contest prep diet and "supplementation".
He's a physical therapist and PT as well, so he knows a few things about the biomechanical workings of the body. That's a given.

As well as genetics, I think it has a lot to do with how you conditioned your body as a youth. You can shape your future by what your habits were like as a kid.
For example, I was able to survive off of a can of soup all day, in my pre-teen years. I was always rail thin as a teen because I just never had an apatite, but I think that I conditioned my body to some degree to stay lean even when I eat like a pig all day now.
Its like laying a foundation for the future. The kids that ate very little , usually stay very lean even after they increase their calorie intake as young adults. The kids that were chubby/fat will always have a hard time getting really lean no matter how little or clean they eat later in life.

If you dont start lifting until your 30 years of age but ate like shit and werent active prior to your 30th birthday then I highly doubt you will ever manage to get to where you could've been had you done it like the above example. Plus it becomes alot harder to hang onto to any gains you make later in life when your body wasnt conditioned for that type of thing for so many years.

I'm having to wade through a considerable amount of bullshit to get to the bottom of what's REALLY going on with Mike. I'll admit this has me a bit hesitant to proceed. I've already been advised by people I'm sure that know better than me to leave it alone, but I don't know...
I really don't know at this point if this guys' cut out for it, and if this isn't just me wishing I could coach myself. At any rate, I'm saving all the e-mails and AIM conversations just in case. It WOULD be interesting...Mike at this point is a classic case of every mistake that bodybuilders make when they operate outside the loops of people that actually "know" how to do what they think they wanna do. Like I said...many times, it's a real feat just to find guys who actually have the balls to approach someone who would allow them to get the best out of themselves. And note that still, in this case, I basically approached MIKE about this. He didn't come to ME, and that doesn't bode well for things right there. Maybe I'm trying to project my ideals onto HIM.

Also Vic M was this year's guest pro, along with a few fitness pro girls, a fair sized expo, and a completely packed auditorium (as we don't get many shows here in Ft Myers)

Drinking half of it post workout would make *some* sense. I also heard it's been suggested that you will need around 180 grams of high GI'd sugar to get the full effect from creatine monohydrate.
But the thing is: Gatorade isn't purely high GI! It's a mix of fructose (low GI), sucrose (high GI) and glucose (highest GI). It doesn't make any sense IMO to drink Gatorade PWO. Why not add some table salt to the dextrose/protein mix instead? JMO

Calories per serving in Gatorade = 50, Servings per 1 gallon container = 16, 50 x 16 = 800 calories per gallon

Why even waste your time with this guy. Any moron can get to at least 10% bf. Hes got a long way to go before he even reaches that point. Once sub 10% most people would require help/advice. Why would he need help or advice now when hes close to 20%?

A Personal Trainer maybe, maybe not. I would be willing to bet that if I pulled over any PT and asked him to give me a chemical breakdown of gatorade and simple sugars they wouldn't be able to tell me. A nutritionist ... definitely.
For a bodybuilder it is all trial and error and doen't say its not. Some things are a plus for one where the same thing is a fault for another. Just watching videos of the pros you can see what works for one, doesn't always work for the other. All of them have different diets (even though their base is the same) and different needs. It's finding the right thing for yourself which is what Michael is trying to do. He has never claimed to know it all. He listens to your critisms (both hostile and subjective) and listens to all the advice that's offered. So you can all say what you like, it makes no difference to the fact that at least he is trying/working towards a goal.

1) Protein: Eat between .7-1.0 Grams/lb. of bodyweight per day. (eg. if you weigh 200lbs. then consume between 140g-200g of protein)
2) Carbohydrates: For energy and metabolism. Good ones are oats, rice, whole wheat bread, noodles, etc... eat between 1-1.5 grams/lb. of bodyweight per day.
3) Be sure you are calorie deficient: A calorie intake in the range of 1500-200 calories is needed if you are interested in getting CUT. Calorie deficient means you are putting out more energy than you are taking in. The most effective way is to continue your workouts as planed and add about 30-40 minutes of cardio or aerobic training.
4) Eat according to the clock: This is the most important part of the cutting phase as well. Your goal should be to maintain a high metabolism so that you are "burning" fat even when you are resting. If you eat 6-7 small meals throughout the day, you body will become accustomed to that schedule and will store less fat. If you think it is best to starve yourself and just east one big or even two medium sized meals... think again. Your body will become accustomed to that as well and store more fat for when you are not eating.

A Personal Trainer maybe, maybe not. I would be willing to bet that if I pulled over any PT and asked him to give me a chemical breakdown of gatorade and simple sugars they wouldn't be able to tell me. A nutritionist ... definitely.
For a bodybuilder it is all trial and error and doen't say its not. Some things are a plus for one where the same thing is a fault for another. Just watching videos of the pros you can see what works for one, doesn't always work for the other. All of them have different diets (even though their base is the same) and different needs. It's finding the right thing for yourself which is what Michael is trying to do. He has never claimed to know it all. He listens to your critisms (both hostile and subjective) and listens to all the advice that's offered. So you can all say what you like, it makes no difference to the fact that at least he is trying/working towards a goal.

Another thing I wonder about. I think there's been mentioned earlier that Arvilla doesn't eat bread, or much of any carbs when on a cutting diet. Question: Why does he recommend it on his website?

Theres a lot of fancy ways to go about fat loss. The difference in glycemic index of white vs. brown rice is very small. But you should focus on eating unprocessed foods anyways.
Bottom line is you have to burn more calories than you take in. If I were you I'd start taking 12x bodyweight in pounds. Time to start monitoring calories chubbs.
