Also, I advocate finding the absolute highest amount of calories you can consume and yet remain in a deficit while dieting. This is simply accomplished by slow adjustment, perhaps monthly or bi-monthly.
For instance, I am eating 2800 calories day in and day out and am losing 1 lb, every 2 weeks or so. IF I see a stagnation I will reduce to 2600 calories and sit there for a good few months.
I find I really don`t have to go below 2400 at all.
In October I raise my calories to about 3000 and keep them there until April. So you see, its really nothing new and it certainly is something that everyone SHOULD know how to do.
Its simple, enjoyable, effective and guaranteed to work.

When people say that we are all different that only applies with specifics. Biologically and physiologically we are all identical. The basic general principles applies to all of us. Otherwise a science such as medicine could not exists. For example, if you have a bacterial infection it will be treated with antibiotics. What type of antibiotics will vary from individual to individual. I'm allergic to penicillin but that does not invalidate antibiotics. Just that specific one. Calories in and calories out applies to everybody. Everybody. But how many calories one needs in order to lose, maintain or gain weight varies widely. But the same basic principle applies. Bench pressed may not work for you vis-a-vis (fancy language for Adonis) pec development. Maybe you need to do more fly work or inclines/declines but the basic principle of resistance training applies to everyone. How much and how one responds, as in prescribing medicine, also varies widely.
Again, if it's just dropping weight in and of itself it's calories in calories out regardless of the macronutrient profile and the individual. But if you want to lose fat and preserve muscle then it's a little bit trickier.

All you need to know for preservation and for muscle gain is: .5 to 1 gram per lb of bodyweight in protein (which is easy to eat just by default) and eat as many calories as you possibly can while remaining in a deficit. This is also easy to gauge. Pick a reasonable starting amount, say 2700 and adjust accordingly.
In the "offseason" just go slightly higher in calories, perhaps 200-400 more than your initial starting point of your highest calories whilst cutting.
Simple as that.
Here's where I differ (or maybe not and it's just assumed in your argument) in regards to preserving muscle while losing fat. Not only is adequate protein required, which you reasonably address, I think resistance training is absolutely essential. You have to give your body a reason to hold on to muscle. There's a reason why it's so hard to build muscle. There's a reason why your body will put an absolute limit to how much muscle you can attain. Not so with fat where virtually everyone has the capacity to store so much fat as to deform the human form. Not possible naturally with muscle and even with drugs and peptides and great effort you still can't achieve the level of deformation that the morbidly obese can. There is a metabolic cost to muscle. Even at rest it require blood supply, nutrients.... Fat is just stored energy which from your body's perspective is always a good thing. Give your body the slightest reason it will drop the muscle. When your leg is in a cast you don't lose fat but the muscle quickly disappears. On a caloric deficit your body is going to start fighting you. Something has changed and it thinks it may be going into a period of starvation and wants to preserve calories. It's much more efficient to drop the unneeded and calorie draining muscle than to drop fat. Resistance training gives your body the signal that it needs to hold on to that muscle.Yep. Train Hard and Train Heavy as you can. Couple that with what I wrote above and you are on your way.

as far as the debate goes.... once all essential nutrient requirements are met, including sufficient protein and essential fatty acids(omega 3 supp is all thats needed for efa's for most people), then the determining fctor is total calories.. doesnt matter if it comes from brown rice, sweet potatoe, oatmeal, donuts, cake, or ice cream.
there is one piece of the puzzzle missing.. and it is a bit of an exception for the very high protien diets.. if all your eating is protein, barely any carbs for fats at all, then you can increase your calories significantly over what they would normally be without adding fat. this is because the body uses alot of calories justr to digest the protein, and also because the body is very inefficient at trying to convert protein into useable energy.

The Thermic Effect of Protein is only 5-20 percent in ideal biochemical conditions. So its not really relevant to consider.
For instance, if you eat 2500 calories of protein and the TEF is around 10 percent, you would have a whopping savings of 250 calories.
Sorry, its just not worth it or practical to shove that much meat down your throat for such minimal savings. The same could be accomplished by drinking near freezing water or exposing yourself to brief sessions of intense cold.

A calorie is a calorie for the MOST part. You can opt for a complex carb over sugar or whatever at different times for SOME insulin control, but it is not that big of a deal. Protein is only needed for the functions it serves. Once you have enough for growth, you CAN NOT USE ANYMORE!!.
Last time Goodrum and I saw each other, it was around 5 years ago. He saw me on both diets, the bodybuilding dogma stuff and the 'Adonis diet' that I used. I believe he would tell you I looked better eating less calories and eating things like a MilkyWay preworkout than I ever did previously.
I am not saying it is optimal to eat candy and ice cream all day, every day. I am saying that ENOUGH protein, ENOUGH carbs, Enough fats and a calorie reduction will work for weight loss. The same thing plus calories works for weight gain. It really is that simple.

I know he and I both fell for Mike Mentzer's later training philosophies and wasted time with it. I know he and I both fell for the typical bodybuilding bullshit that you read about in magazines.
However I do know that whenever we ran into each other, he always sincerely offered advice to the best of his ability. He even offered to sell me supplements at a gigantic discount where he would of had to have broke even or whatever to give that price.
Believe it or not, Goodrum specializes in entertainment, and a lot of the ridiculous stuff on here is seemingly for fun and content, not out of serious things.
You take it way to far, and he has responded in kind. You would think you would stop responding to him, since he is taken as a joke character on the internet forums most of the time (his intention). He may provide puffery with his PT advice, claims, and whatever else, but show me one person who is in that business and not doing that. I am not saying he knows it all, hell he is the first person to admit that. However he does know enough for the people he trains, and has some good ideas. You will not make money competing with all of the contest prep guys, especially if you do not master the drug stuff. The money is in the normal people, and particularly the baby boomers who want to stay in shape and feel younger. Goodrum does not do anything that isn't already done in this industry, he is just playing the game.
Adonis looks fantastic, and has never shown any indication that he does not do what he suggests. I think he will do things in a cycle, like one week eat more ice cream, and the next switch over to chicken or whatever, but his point holds water. I have seen it done in my own body. Hell, Goddrum was shocked last time he saw me and found out that I ate 'like crap' and looked better than before. He looked shocked and somewhat appalled when I told him I was off to Mcdonald's or whatever for my post workout meal, lol.
I have refined it since then. You must burn more than you use to lose fat. However you must also get all of your required nutrients. The same goes with bulking.
I believe in more frequent meals, but it is no big deal really. It is hard to eat like 1500 calories in one meal, then make it to your last one if you are eating 2000 calories.

The nutrition is always there by default. Also, I prefer white bread for Hamburgers of course. White Breads now have tons of great Vitamins and Minerals added and even contain around 9 grams of protein, (in the hamburger buns I use.).
I do like Artisan breads as well and will bake bread every now and then. (King Arthur Flour Cookbook is the best baking book period!)
Anyways, keep up the good work and I enjoyed reading your experiences. Vince is vastly improving and I do think in time, he will pull off his dream of the physique he has always envisioned for himself.

I am a nobody. The guy who trained me was a nobody as well, although he did get to work in territories and job on TV. He has been involved since 1986 (when I was born), so he got to do things that were not options when I did it.
I started training at 15, and was done at 18.
I only worked 1 show out of the show we had at the training center because I refused to drive all over the southeast and lose money for awhile. I thought I would send a tape in to the WWE and go that route instead. I refuse to do something and lose money.
Heck, there are guys in this area who still do it, actually got to work with the WWE once, and they still have their day jobs.
It is sort of like how everyone out of the top 5 in the Olympia has to have some other income stream.

You are right about the TA "principles." It's nothing new. When it comes to weight loss, maintenance, and gain it's all about calories in and calories out. What I don't like about TA is how he seems to emphasize how he eats donuts, ice cream, pastries... "whatever he wants." But the problem with most people is that if you eat foods with a high glycemic index it doesn't, as my mom use to say when we would eat poi (mashed taro root) for breakfast, "stick to your ribs." You get hungry again faster because of the insulin spike and you tend to eat more. It's been proven that "sugary" foods stimulates the appetite. It certainly works that way for me since I can eat a lot more brownies than I can eat mixed vegetables.
One of the major difference between simple, high glycemic carbs; and complex, low glycemic carbs, is fiber. That's why you can fill yourself up with a lot of vegetables but not ingest a lot of calories. Lets take for example an apple, if I were to make you a glass of apple juice I'd probably have to use 3-4 apples to get a decent glass of apples juice. You will get the same amount of calories as if you ate those apples but what will fill you up more and "stick to your ribs"?
Now it's a little bit different with fat. Fat is low glycemic but very calorie dense. Over twice the amount of calories per gram than protein and carbohydrates. So having two pieces of fried chicken versus two pieces of grilled chicken will still fill you up the same but the fired chicken will have way more calories. Also, at least for me, I seem to able to chow down a lot more food when it's battered and fried because it taste so good. Eating steam broccoli versus broccoli breaded and deep fried in tempura batter is like night and day for me.
Also, TA seems to dismisses the nutritional value of so called "healthy" foods versus donuts, cakes and ice cream -- especially since he doesn't advocate vitamin supplements. Another issue never mentioned is by eating high glycemic carbohydrates you eventually develop insulin resistance leading to type 2 diabetes. By having insulin always in your system you start to develop a resistance to your own insulin which forces your body to produce more and more insulin to process a given unit of carbohydrate and when taken to extremes you burn out your pancreas and you are no longer to produce any insulin at all making you now a type 1 diabetic. You want to avoid foods that cause an insulin spike and consume foods that take longer to be broken down into glucose so that you have a slow and steady release of energy and avoid that insulin spike.
Most people are not that active. Many simply do not have the time or desire to train as much and as hard as we do. They have other priorities in life. I'm not going to criticize them for that. So for most people it does matter what food choices they make if they want to satisfy their hunger and not get fat.

Yeah, I don't advocate eating nothing but cookies all of the time or anything like that. However if there is an exchange, like GI rating vs GI rating, I go for the tastier food. I also use a vitamin.
However, I am a bit skeptical about the development of type 2 diabetes in lean, non overweight people. If you go over your genetically entitled weight to a point, you end up in the situation where you are asking the pancreas to release more insulin with everything.
However, we all workout, which increases insulin sensitivity, as you know, so our extra weight is 'good'.
I am not too sure about how to refute anything for sure, but here is my schedule for the day so far:

Yeah, I don't think anyone, day in, day out, should eat nothing but ice cream. However generally the food recommendations of bodybuilders are wayyyyy off the mark unless you have pharmaceutical help.
I agree with Adonis, .5-1 gram of protein per pound is fine. I like the .5 figure better for dieting for me, and the 1 figure for gaining. However I take it a step further and only eat for the lean mass. So, if I am 265 but only have 220 pounds of lean mass, I eat for a 230 pound guy in the way of protein when gaining. You really only need a little bit more. Guys needlessly gain a lot of fat when 'bulking'. What is the point of being a bodybuilder if you only look near your best a few weeks a year?

I think I've been very clear about my time in wrestling. It was very short and not sweet. I don't even think I even broke even between travel and gas. The only thing good that came out of it was that I gained a few good friends and I didn't get any major injuries. So there's no reason for me to put that shit over anything.

You know, I used to read your posts when you were ONLYME. They were entertaining and they represented a great time in a great industry. Do I want to do what you got to do? Absolutely, and I am jealous of you for it.

Goodrum and I got off on the wrong foot. However I did not harvest this grudge against him, and I thought pointing out flaws in his physique would be like making fun of someone's eye color or something. It is true that Goodrum's confidence level, at times seems higher than his physique should allow. However if you really look at what he has to work with, he has done an awesome job as of his recent contest.
I too would call him on BS in real life to find that he honestly believed in the stuff he was talking about. Hell, I believed that one set to failure all of the time was optimal for everyone once.
